I am relatively new to the finer nuances of pipe smoking(and am grateful to you all for expanding my horizons),however, I still cannot seem to match a pipe with a tobacco correctly. My palate is primarily keen on medium to heavy English blends....can you recommend a specific pipe brand/style to suit these tobaccos? Maybe a Peterson or others....thanks, Dan |

If you really want to try Peterson, allow me to suggest a System Standard 301 or if you can afford it, a 1S (that's the deluxe). I've found a pot will smoke almost anything you throw at it. It has something to do with the diameter to depth ratio. Older Charatans Make (Lane era) pipes are another great choice altho they can be a bit pricey. For Charatans Make, check www.neatpies.com and look at the new (vintage) section. He has a fairly nice selection of mid '60s Belvederes. Know that #005 is going to be mine soon. |

Dan, I find it kind of mysterious too. I have pipes that are of the same sort of size, bowl dimension, shape, etc, that seem to favor different tobaccos, or rather, which seem to bring different things out of certain tobaccos. The ONLY pipe I have that gives Presbyterian any plummy notes is a Peterson 315xl. My Bjarne freehand seems to bring the Va content forward in light English blends. The new Mastro de Paja seems to have a very round flavour profile, making fairly heavy blends taste sweet. One thing I will say is that I really think that with a few exceptions, to get the most out of your tobacco, you need a certain grade of pipe. I reckon Stanwell meets that, and I think Peterson does too. I'm a huge fan of handmade Italian pipes, and I highly suggest you check out the Masto Beraldi pipes at pipesandcigars.com, or Mastro de Pajas at any number of places. For English (actually, for almost everything) I tend to like a pretty tall bowl, and relatively skinny, like a calabash. I'm sure others will say the opposite. Have you had a pipe that you only smoke English blends in? Sometimes smoking a hodge podge will leave a pipe that isn't particularly good at anything. Smoking for me is very subjective, and mood is important. If I happen to get a tobacco just-so for moisture, and have a nice relaxing smoke with it while reading about Captain Ahab or something, I tend to think "Wow, what a great pipe." but really any pipe probably would have done the same. I was not fond of either Penzance or my Savinelli Oom Paul until I just accidentally had a perfect drive-to-work smoke with that combination. Is that to say that you need a full bent to smoke Latakia flakes? Nah. |
