Okay, so this spring after reading an old P&T review of Barking Dog my interest was peaked about old time'y blends. Couldn't find any Barking Dog so I picked up some of C&D's Junkyard Dawg, understanding it was a faithful reproduction. We'll the Dawg was good, very good and I was happily introduced to cubed burley. A month later I purchase some of House of Windsor's Barking Dog (along with some Revelation). Whoa! This was nothing like J Dawg and not in a good way. The nutty burly and light latakia goodness was not there. Instead it was like smoking a ground up Swisher Sweet cigar with some nasty topping. The Revelation was slightly better and bit more smokable but after two or three tries I can't see myself trying the Barking Dog again though the smell in the tin is now fading and less hideous. Anyone else have any experience comparing these two blends?

I didn't actually compare the two, but I did try HoW's Barking Dog. Like you, I wasn't impressed. It was smokable, but not a blend I would buy again. C&D does much better work with uncased burlies, IMO.

Ryan: Sadly, HoW just has not done Barking Dog the credit it deserves. When Phillip Morris had BD, and its stronger cousin Handsome Dan, the burleys were outstanding and the latakia was added in a measured amount. When I suggested JD, it was to honor the taste and the quality of the original BD. Generally, I don't believe that HoW has exercised the same level of quality control which one found in many of the older blends.

Hello Bob, what an honor to have you reply to my post. Thank you for the wonderful smoke! Wish I could have smoked some of the original Barking Dog however I am more than content with finding your version. Junkyard Dawg was the one of the first blends to really speak to me. Thanks for such a proper introduction to good burly. I just received some more C&D Burley blends for the holidays, Morley's Best and Crooner(my favorite movie is White Christmas), both of which I am really enjoying. Can't wait to get my hands on some more of your fine blends!

For a few years a couple decades ago Barking Dog was my daily smoke, back when Phillip Morris made it, and when HOW revived it I thought at first they did a pretty good job, but I soon lost interest and decided I just wasn't interested in BD any more. The other day I opened another HOW tin and it tastes just awful, nothing like what I remember in the old days.

I haven't tried Junkyard Dawg. I guess I should.
