I recently started smoking English blends coming from strictly aromatics and have fallen in love with it. So far I have been limited to 965 and Squadron Leader. Love them both. I'm looking for something else along those lines or slightly stronger. Any suggestions? Thanks. |

John Dunhill London Mixture is a step stronger than 965, but still very much a classic English. Dunhill's Durbar (or Rattray's Red Rapparee) move more toward the Turkish/Oriental side, and are certainly worth a try. Durbar is a bit more refined, but both are wonderful blends. Dunhill's Nightcap is marvelous, though rather different from the two you mention. Much more Latakia, and peppery due to the Perique added. It's quite a bit stronger and fuller because of this. For a very nice blend along the line of 965/SL you might try Esoterica's Margate. VERY nice tobacco. I have not tried Penzance, but it's highly thought of. It's certainly worth your time, from all I hear. My preferred smoke is 965 in bulk. Reasonable price and a classic English. It's my "go to" tobacco, along with Early Morning Pipe, another Dunhill blend that is lighter (little or no Latakia), but on the same lines. Hope that helps... David Lowe |

Penzance is good, smooth, Latakia-laden fun. I like Peterson's Old Dublin Quite a bit - it's a good solid middle-of-the-road English with a splash of Basma. (Sweeter, lighter version being Frog Morton on the Town - also a delight). Astley's #99 Royal Tudor is very good. Presbyterian Mixture is very good - heavy in a different way than 965, and a bit friendlier all around. Rattray's Red Rapparee is another excellent blend that shows what you can do with little or no latakia but a nice dose of Orientals on a good Virginia base. Sorry, nothing else comes to mind just now. ;) |

Pipeworks & Wilkes have the best Aromatic/English blends that have sidelined my 965, Nightcap, & Odessey. Try # 10, #524, & High Hat & yes Penzance is my 5th English Rotation |

Similar, yet slightly stronger? Try S. Gawith's Commonwealth Mixture or Rattray's Black Mallory. |

John: I'll third or fourth Penzance; it's definitely my personal "Arcadia" blend. If you don't mind heading into Balkan territory, which tends to move the latakia element into the background while giving good weight to Turkish and Orientals (tobaccos that have more of an acrid taste and aroma), you might also enjoy G.L. Pease's Charing Cross; for a full-blown Balkan, try Pease's Odyssey. I can't personally point you toward Nightcap, because I simply can't tolerate the dose of perique it contains. But if perique is no problem for you, it's certainly a good bet. Finally, even though I haven't opened any of my tins yet, you might enjoy the newish Syrian latakia blend from MacBaren: HH Vintage Syrian. Syrian latakia has a noticeably creamier taste/aroma than the much more common Cyprian latakia (which is what you'd find in 965). I love latakia -- from *any* country, apparently -- but I am particularly drawn to the Syrian variety. It's possible you would be too. Enjoy! Bob |

Well, I've picked up some Nightcap and love it. On order is Penzance and Black Mallory. Thanks for all the great suggestions. I'm sure I'll try them all eventually. I'm really looking forward to the Penzance. All I hear are great things about it. Thanks again. Suggestions still welcome. |

I have recently smoked a tin of Gordon Pym and have found it an excellent English blend. The blend is well balanced and the latakia is there in just the right amount. Its a very quality natural tobacco blend that you might try. It one of the CAO/Dan Pipe tinned blends and is available from a number of vendors. |

I'll second the Wilke #10 and 524 and throw in Smoker's Haven Exotique and Our Best Blend. A fun thing also to do is buy some blending Turkish, Latakia and a couple of VA's from C&D or some McClellands blenders, look in the bulk section, from smokingpipes.com and have a go at making one or more English blends yourself. Tinker until you find the formulae that speaks loudest to you own palate. |

If you really want to OD on the Latakia, give C&D's Pirate Kake a try. It's got 70% of the smoky leaf. If you would like to try some good Balkans, pipesandcigars.com has the Hearth and Home series blends Ten To Midnight and Larry's Blend. Smokey 2015 in a Stanwell |
