I have been smoking for a year or so now, and I have not tried to many different blends yet. I have smoked: Alsbo Black and Alsbo Gold that came with a starter pack with my first pipe and they were too sweet to me. They tasted like Black and Mild cigars from the drug store. I have smoked a lot of MacBaren Navy Mixture, and it is ok. It somtimes seems a little to mild, and every once in a while I go back to it and it will "wow" me. I have smoked a blend from a local cigar store that was called a Whiskey Cavendish, and that was sweet and interesting. I also have Nightcap, which I enjoy because of the bold tobacco flavor, I know I am smoking tobacco with this. I am guessing I enjoy the Latakia in it, but I am still looking for different tobaccos. Right now, Nightcap is what I smoke mostly. Somtimes, I want to be able to enjoy somthing a little less powerful (only a little) and a little sweeter, but I am not sure what to look for or to maybe buy so I can mix with Nightcap. I also am looking for something with a little more punch than Nightcap. I have a small meerschaum that I plan on using to sample a few tobaccos, and I was wondering if anyone knows a site that sells sample bundles of a few different types. I was looking on pipesandcigars.com for somthing, but I am not sure if I want to try any of those. Basically all I want is somthing a tiny bit weaker and a little sweeter than Nightcap, and somthing that has more of a punch that Nightcap as well. I was looking at these bundles, but I am not sure: Tin Sampler Latakia Lovers Dream 5 Tins in this sampler. Dunhill Mixture 965, McClelland Rose of Latakia, Butera's Royal Vintage Latakia #1 & #2, and to round off the sampler is MacBarens Latakia Blend. and Bulk Sampler Stand By Me No surprises here! This sampler was made for those times you're looking to have a great smoke without risk. Some of the most popular tobaccos we sell. They won't let you down. Why risk it on a perfect night? 2oz. Captain Black; 2oz. Dunhill 965; 2oz. English Luxury; 2oz. Optimum; 2oz. Perfection |

--Right now, Nightcap is what I smoke mostly. For something a little less powerful and a little sweeter, try Dunhill 965 or London Mixture, Samuel Gawith Perfection, or Rattray's Black Mallory. --"I also am looking for something with a little more punch than Nightcap. " For more punch you'll probably need something other than a Latakia blend, since most Latakia blends these days don't have much nicotine. For punch try Samueal Gawith 1792 Flake or Gawith Hoggarth Dark Flake or Peterson Irish Flake. |

I purchased the "Stand By Me" bulk sampler a couple months back, so as to try more blends like you're looking to. It hasn't disappointed me a bit! I like some of them more than others, granted, but the purchase was well worth it to try them all and experience new blends. If I could offer another recommendation in addition to that, there's a sampler of Frog Morton listed on www.pipesandcigars.com that introduced me to FM at a great price. It's become one of my favorites, and if you haven't tried it I'd strongly recommend sampling. If you don't care for that, they've got a good amount of other samplers too. Happy puffing! |

Smokingpipes.com has several samplers and they're great to deal with. I personally enjoy Full Virginia Flake and Mayor's Chocolate Flake and usually keep generous quantities of each on hand. Since you like latakia I would recommend the Chocolate Flake. It has some latakia in it but nowhere near as much as Nightcap and it's somewhat lighter in strength. If you're looking for stronger, anything with a generous amount of Syrian latakia will do it as will 1792 and many of the ropes. Of the ones you listed I have only tried 965 and Captain Black. 965 may be very close to what you're looking for to fill the lighter role. Although I enjoy CB on occassion it is very sweet. Not something I keep on hand. You can't really go with samplers. If you don't like something you can just trade it off. It only takes most of us a couple bowls to know if we like it or not and that's not much out of a couple ounces. |

>> I was wondering if anyone knows a site that sells sample bundles of a few different types. IMO, the best tinned sampler around is on the Cornell & Diehl web site: "We offer a Trial Pack, postage paid, (5 blends, 2 ounces each, you pick'em, including premium blends - pressed, too, if it's available) for $31.00, or 8 blends for $40.00. The trial pack may include C&D tinned tobaccos, GL Pease tins, Two Friends blends, and Hermit Capt. Earle blends but the sample will be 1 ounce." Between those four brands, you've got your pick of many of the very best blends available to pipe smokers. Go for the $40 sampler and have a ball! |

Sounds great so far, I definately will look for a tin of 965. Any other recomendations are welcome! This also caught my eye on pipesandcigars, and I was wondering if anyone has tried this blend or others made by that person. Hearth & Home Frenchy's Sunza Bitches and I pulled this from the description "Perique up the ying yang and, according to the baggie, Bright Virginia Flake and Burley finished with Bourbon (hope it's Jack Daniels)." |

Carole at Pipeworks and Wilke will send you a sampler (4 two ounce baggies) of her blends. The blends are uniformly very good. Check out the reviews at Tobacco Reviews. Peter |

Charles I have smoked about a pound of Frenchy's SOB; I enjoy it a lot. I don't find the Perique to be overpowering, but it's definitely in the forefront. My experience is that this arrives pretty dry, I have smoked it both as shipped and moistened slightly and found no difference in taste. It's well worth a try IMHO |

Bill, would you rate Frenchy's SOB's nicotine kick higher, lower, or about the same to Nightcap, assuming you have tried it before. I will probably be ordering 965 and some pipe cleaners within a few days since I am low on cleaners. This is a side question, if I enjoy 965 a lot, I will probably reserve it for my new Peterson which has only had 2 1/3 bowls and 1 2/3 bowls smoked in it so far of Nightcap. Would should I not smoke it until the 965 comes if I want to smoke 965 in it, or will a few more bowls to break it in not be a problem. |

Charles, SOB's nicotine hit is less than Nightcap. I would rate it about a medium in that department. |

Charles, in addition to the other good recommendations you have gotten here (particularly for the C&D sampler), you might want to consider a sampler of the Hearth and Home blends from www.pipesandcigars.com. Go to their website, get the toll-free number, and give Russ a call. He will steer you in the right direction as to what you should try. I've smoked a lot of H&H tobacco and it's of the highest quality and the blends are very good. |

Try the tobaccos offered by this old line shop. Hand blended at the shop just like 1939 when they started. Really nice folk's too. www.ules.com |
