I have an unopened foil pouch of 8oz Torben Dansk blue note that is one year+. From what I have read in the posts and elsewhere, it was mentioned that one should not Celler aromatics for they do not age well. I really don't want to open it because as of now I am into straight Virgina blends. Any suggestions or comments?. |

I have a self made humidor so I can keep them around for quite some time, humidors are actually very cheap to make, that is if you have enough tobacco to make it worth building. |

If you leave it unopened in the original foil pouch, I don't think you'll have any problem storing for at least another year. When folks talk about aromatics not aging well, my take is that they mean long-term storage...i.e., over a couple years. IMO, if it's never been unsealed after it was originally packaged in gas-impermeable container, you won't have a problem. If you've been reading about aging on this site, you've probably seen links to the Tobacco Aging and Cellaring web site. Some pretty good info from master blenders in the business like Greg Pease. Another option might be to post a request-for-trade notice in the "Wanted" section of this forum if you'd rather just get rid of the tobacco due to a taste change. |

I do have humidores which I use. I guess the question that I'm asking is what the "shelf life" would be and how long should I wait to smoke or trade before it goes bad. Thanks Kevin for your input. |

Aging refers to particular chemical process of transforming sugar and other components into some ethers, oils and so on. When people say aromatics do not age well it basically means that the transformation with age is not so significant as with, say, Virginias. Since the foil pouch is presumably not sufficiently air tight then aging would be questionable regardless of the tobacco in the pouch. There are still some changes but it's not "real" aging. These changes make the question about shelf-life more complicated. I've seen a noticeable improvement of a pouch packed aromatic after about 1 year storing. While I usually do not smoke aromatics I still have some about 1 year old pouches in my stash and feel pretty comfortable about not opening them for at least half-year. I would consider humidity not to be of the main concern when we talk about storing aromatics in their original pouches. The problem is that if moisture dissipates then so does ethers, oils and other stuff that constitutes flavor. How long will it take before the tobacco will start noticeably loosing the quality? It's difficult to say precisely, since it depends on a lot of factors. Some people say that 1 year is absolutely safe. Other people smoked 10 years old tobaccos from their original pouches and found them smokable. If I would be concerned I would put the pouch in a ziplock (or double) with a humidifying disk and forget about all potential troubles. |

I've had opened aromatics in my humidor for almost a year and they were still quite smokable! A word of warning though, the taste will change, sometimes for the better and sometimes not! Misha's idea of the ziplock and humidifying disk sounds like a good one though. |

Thanks Misha, I double sealed it in Ziplocks w/humidore disk. Now watch, a week from now I'll have a hankering for blue note and all of this was a waste of everyones time. But on the otherhand,I learned alot as usual from this forum. |
