I've been smoking pipe for about two years, and one of the first tins I purchased was Ashton's Pebblecut. I finished the tin, and forgot about the stuff for a while, as I was eager to try different blends.

A week or so ago, I was going through my old empty tins, and came across the Pebblecut. I drove out to my tobacconist to pick up another tin, and told me that Ashton stopped making it and reblended their entire line.

Can anyone suggest a replacement?

Hello, Nicholas

Pebblecut was a blended flake, with Virginias, orientals, perique and I think a little air-cured. Butera's Royal Vintage Blended Flake may be the closest replacement you'll find. It's made by McClelland, as was the American edition of Pebblecut.

I haven't smoked the Ferndown Black and Tan mixture for a couple of years, but the flavor profile seemed pretty similar to me. It's a ribbon-cut, as I recall, and not a flake.

McClelland's own Virginia #24 is another blended flake--no perique in this one but some really nice dark Virginias and a bit of drama, a Turkish leaf.

Lastly, and a bit further afield, there's Cairo from G.L. Pease. This is a lot lighter than Pebblecut, both in color and flavor, but it's made to the same general pattern: Virginias, orientals, perique and no latakia.

Hope you can find a satisfactory replacement for Pebblecut, one of my old favorites as well.

McClelland's #24 Virginia is as close as I've been able to come to it. I am currently smoking my final tin of Pebblecut, which is one that I had inadvertently cellared for 3 years...the optimum for this one as far as my tastes are concerned. When I first found out, over a year ago, that Pebblecut was no longer being produced, I set out to identify a replacement, too. While the #24 Virginia is good straight off the shelf, I have put aside a supply to age for one, two and three years down the road. I have smoked a tin that's been cellared for one year and have noticed a positive change. Meanwhile I have found out recently that McClelland is now able to hold back their tinned Virginias on their shelves for three years before sending them off for distribution. My local tobacconist assures me that the next delivery of #24 Virginia he receives will have dates on the tins that are from three years ago. That will be nice.
Cheers and inner peace,
