Hi

I was wondering if anyone has heard of the Boston Stoker. (It was a Dayton, OH chain of smoke shops which is now a coffee place.) At any rate, way back in the 70's and 80's, they had their 'house blend' of pipe tobacco named 'Ugly Chucks' which I smoked. I'm trying to find something similar to smoke. As I have no clue to the makeup of the blend, I was wondering if anyone would?

Thanks!

Theo

Dear Theo,I learned much of what I know about pipes from the folks at Boston Stoker.Ugly Chucks was, indeed, thier signature house blend;the formula being quite secret...you'ld have better luck stealing missile launch codes than getting them to tell you what's in it.But,after two decades of watching, tasting, observing and just plain listning,I can tell you Ugly Chucks consisted of four tobaccos that they sold in bulk.It was possible to "blend up" Ugly Chucks as a private blend just from the jars on the shelf as I heard the proprietor complain one night that two of his customers had done just that! One was a vanillia cased black cavandish from Lane, one was a whisky cavandish from Stokobee, one was a bulk they marketed as Sweet Question...a mango or "tropical fruit" cased blend of of unidentified distribution and a "blending tobacco" they sold under the name of Royal Scott. This was a key ingrediant. The last was a Stokobee burley/virginia/oriental flake with a neutral sugar or honey casing. Many B&M's of the period carried this...but as a "blender";only "the Stoker" put it on the shelf as a tobacco in its own right...too bad,it was good stuff.Alas,it is no longer available. This, friend Theo, was Ugly Chucks. Now,if you can get in touch with the folks at The Wharf in Beavercreek,Ohio, tell them what you are looking for;they have a house blend that is equivalent to Ugly Chucks.Good luck friend Theo, and happy puffing.

Bill

Wow! Thanks much for the information! I had no idea it was that complex. I'll have my brother who lives in Beavercreek see if he can get me some of the tobacco from The Wharf.

Thanks again!

Theo,I'm sorry I don't recall The Wharf's name for thier version of Ugly Chucks.Thier proprietor was a "Stoker" before becomming a "Wharf Rat" and sampled his share of UC;he certainly knew where he was headed when he blended his own version.I haven't smoked it myself, but i've no doubt that it's close;certainly in the same vein.As to the origenal Ugly Chucks,I know it had four components, that all four were stairing at you from the shelf, and the named compotents are my best guess. No one, employee, owner or customer has ever told me I'm wrong...though I don't claim to have the proportions exact. If it helps your brother any, The Wharf is at 3464 New Germany-Trebein Rd.,Beavercreek Ohio 45431;across from the Fairfield Mall, down by Sam's Club.Thier phone number is 937-426-0633.Can't help wondering if we've met before;anyway,I hope this helps...good luck,Bill.
