I just got my first tin of this today. I was looking for something that had a pleasant room note for my non-smoking friends and family that complained of my English belends smelling like burining wood Anyway, I understand, this is a Cognac flavored English blend and taste pretty darned good However am I correct is my belief that this is not a true aromatic? Do I need to worry about it leaving an over powering taste in my pipe, especially one that I dedicate to English or Virginias. Right now I am smoking in a Peterson 302 System pipe that I use for almost anything. |

Hi George, Pembroke is essentially Margate with a touch of cognac added. To me it is not an aromatic and retains its English character in spite of the cognac topping. I smoke it in the same pipes I use for English/latakia blends and haven't noticed any fouling or other aftereffects from the cognac. |

Most folks consider Pembroke a English mixture/aromatic hybrid. It's the classiest of that type IMHO. |

The Margate that forms the base of Pembroke is very flavorful in its own right. The effect of the Margate on your pipe will be far greater than the effect of the cognac. I certainly wouldn't smoke Pembroke in a pipe destined for VAs, but it won't have an unpleasant effect on a pipe that you smoke other English blends in. What I'd question is whether Pembroke will please your friends if they don't like the smell of Margate. I've never smelled either--I've always been the one doing the smoking (I still don't quite understand how that works, but it sure is a fact), so I can't say for certain. But I don't think someone who dislikes the smell of latakia-rich English blends will like Pembroke. (Someday, I'll sit, passively, while someone else smokes a bowl of my Pembroke, but how much fun am I willing to sacrifice in the name of Science?) It's some mighty tasty stuff, however! |
