You may have seen some of my posts in the General list.
Yes I am new here, my first pipe is a Meerschaum.
I may have been a bit hasty when selecting my first tobbaco, I selected Davidoff Green Mixture, I looked up tobbacoreviews.com and it is named Light Mixture.
Books can not be judged by their covers, I suspect this also applies to tobbacos.
I must admitt I did choose this green mixture by the discription that was with it, it read something like the following:

Mature Virginia, flavorful Burley and Black Cavendish, promise you a light pleasurable smoke. All of those around you will enjoy the discreet harmony of its fresh and slightly fruity aroma.

Also I read the reviews for this tobbaco and they dont seem to rate it high.
What do you think of this particular tobbaco?
Have I selected a dud? Should I try it as my first or should I wait for awhile until I am somewhat more experience. If so what would you recomend for the first tobbacos for the beginner.
Would this taint my Meerschaum re the davidoff?

I dont think dud is the right word, i just dont think it is along mt tastes.

You should note before i go on that my tastes har heavy smokey blends that are not for alot of people i know.

I would invest in 2-3 cheap cob pipes. Get a few oz. of tabaccy as a sampler, that way you can try a few diffrent types of blends to find what you like. From there we could diffect you in the right direction.

First of all, don't take those TobaccoReviews posts as anything but a rough guide. There are 4-Stars I don't care for all that much and 3-Stars (and the occasional 2-Star) that I wonder why they were rated so low. So we all have different tastes and expectations.

For a new smoker who's unsure where to start, here's how I suggest you use TobaccoReviews:

1. Click on Browse "By Rating" followed by 4-Star, later 3-Star

2. Click on the underlined word "Reviews" to rank order the rated tobaccos by the number of reviews. Obviously give more weight to a 4-Star tobacco with 50 reviews than a 4-Star with just a handful of reviews. Of course, many of those posts are "me too" reviews with nothing of substance to add and others are so far off the mark that I'm convinced the reviewer never even tried it out...just wanted to see himself in print. But you can get a rough idea about the tobacco by reading the posts associated with it.

3. Next, I'd go through the 4-Star and 3-Star weighted average lists and, after reading the reviews, pick out one each of the following: an Aromatic, a Perique, a Latakia, an Oriental (without Latakia), a Virginia and a Burley.

That's about $50 worth of tobacco if you buy a 2 oz tin of each... SmokingPipes is my online retailer of choice.

Then follow Patric's advice and pick up a few cobs to prevent any crossover effect. If you're trying to save on cobs, try the Aromatic, Virginia and Burley in the same pipe and the Oriental and Latakia in the same pipe.

Over the course of a month or so, smoke a minimum of an ounce of each (takes at least that much to really start to get a feel for a tobacco) and decide which category (or more) of tobacco appeals to you.

When you've figured that out, you can zero in on tobaccos with nuances that are a good match.

One more thing, once you've smoked all those tins, go back and re-read the TobaccoReviews postings on each tobacco. If you're lucky, you'll find a frequent reviewer who calls 'em like you see 'em.

Then you can click on Browse "By Reviewer" and pull up all the reviews by that particular person. If you both have a general agreement about a wide range of tobaccos, it'll save you a lot of trouble when buying the next round of smokes.

In my case, I pretty much agree with reviewer Sykes Wilford who also happens to be the Founder & President of SmokingPipes.

oh i almost forgot, while smoking keep a log of your thoughts of each blend. It will help recall your likes and dislikes when figuring out what blends to try.
