I was hoping I could get some guidance on how to load my pipe with Penzance. I'm having trouble keeping it lit and even after leaving it out for 24 hours seems to smoke wet like an aromatic. I've tried to fold it and gently slip it into the chamber and it just seems to fall apart and when trying to get it in there it acts like soft chewing gum and seems to pack in hard. Should I rub it out before packing? The pipe I smoke it in has no filter of any kind and I don't wanna get "chunks" in my mouth. Any help would be appreciated. And by the way, this stuff is heavenly to smoke even when I have trouble keeping it lit! |

I found it tastes best in a poker. I fold 2 or 3 sheets in half and sort of roll it into the size of the pokers bowl and slide it in. The trick is to guess the amount to just fit in the bowl. When I get it right? The bowl will last me 1 1/2 hours at least and the taste is amazing! |

The best method I know of for that style of flake (crumble cake) is to grab some out of the tin, and just kind of plop it in your other hand, or on a plate. It will already be falling to pieces. Take the biggest chunks, at say, 1/4", and drop them in the bottom of the pipe. Fill the pipe from biggest to smallest pieces, leaving the dusty bits for the top. No tamping, or very very little. Light it up, tamp it flat, and enjoy. That stuff smokes with almost no heat at all. |

Todd, I don't find it falling to pieces just... I fold it in half and most of it is certainly larger than 1/4 inch.

The Penzance I've had, I could hardly get out of the tin in even half-flake form. It just exploded if I handled it. So I eventually stopped bothering trying to get out flakes at all, and just went after it like a back-hoe. Your pics look more like an ordinary (albeit broken) flake... Either way - bust it up, drop it in, light it up! |

Well, Penzance is a flake tobacco and in my hands breaks up as shown above. |

Todd, My experience is the same as yours when handling the Penzance. The first things I read on how to pack this type of tobac suggested the folding method. But my experience resulted in a crumbling comedy or horrors! Even though what you have suggested sounds like a PITB I'll give it a shot only because I REALLY like Penzance. Melvin, I can only assume you are/have been getting moister Penzance? I dunno! 'Course I got kinda "big dummy" fingers too! |

I have been getting Penzance for years and what you see above is what happens after folding--by me. |
