I am a new pipe smoker and green when it comes to tobacco choices. I have been smoking only aromatic blends and know little about anything else. At this moment I am smoking Brigham"s vanilla and Maple. After searching this forum which has very good advice from many seasoned pipe smokers I have decided to try PA and/or Carter Hall which I have never smoked and I am looking for some advice on these. Any advice you can give I will appreciate. Thanks in advance |

buy both, they are great starter blends. you also get a bonus when you buy both since you can mix them 50/50 for a third blend. here are some tips which should help: don't pack too tight. puff SLOW, these can bite if you smoke too fast. get yourself a cob, PA and CH smoke best in a cob. |

Tobaccoreviews.com can give you some good (and varied!) reviews of both of these time-honored blends. As to me, I'm a dedicated CH man. I love the soft nuttiness and slight sweetness of the flavoring. Smoke it fast and the bottom of the bowl will be bitter, but us Burley fans find it quite nice with some black coffee or whiskey on the side! PA is a more straight Burley. There is little flavoring added that I can detect. PA has more nicotine and to some people smells like cigarettes, which in my house is a real problem. So, I choose CH. You can blend it with anything or enjoy as is. You must remember though to buy the tub, not the box, as it seems to be far superior in taste. I don't know why that is, but it is! I would try them both! You can always blend them if you need some other flavor added to them. They are both classics in their own rights! |

William, I can not recommend enough trying some Carter Hall. It is a good, simple, easy, burley with a touch of virginia. It burns cool and dry leaving a clean ash in the bottom of your pipe. I don't think that you can go wrong with this stuff. Chrck the reviews at Tobaccoreviews.com. Peace and all good. Father-B |

Welcome William! The bacy review site at http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/ may help you with your choices. In the mean time, if you're in the States I have about an oz of "Blender's Gold Burley & Black" I can send, as well as a sample of CH, gratis. If interested, click on my name to email me off list. PA is a nice, gentle smoke. Not that big on flavor, very cigarette like (to me). I smoke it from time to time. |

PA and CH are both great Burley blends. Just dry them out a bit and fill your pipe of choice loosely and you will be all set. |

I like both of them. Sir Walter Raleigh (regular, non-aromatic) is another good, simple burley that is easy to smoke and quite pleasant. |

I'm relatively new to pipe smoking. I've tried many aromatics and English blends, but whatever I try, nothing seems to beat Carter Hall! The aromatics smell good, but don't seem to taste as well as they smell (cavendish doesn't appeal to me very much - not much taste). I kind of like English, but I have to be in a mood for it. I'm kind of sensitive to a lot of nicotine and CH seems to be alright. It loads easily and stays lit. It is the one tobacco I can turn to and know I'll enjoy. For some reason, I don't even like Edgeworth readyrubbed which many say is excellent. I feel kind of funny about this because there are so many tobaccos out there and I don't want to miss out on something else really good. Any advice? |

"I feel kind of funny about this because there are so many tobaccos out there and I don't want to miss out on something else really good. Any advice?" it sounds as if you have found "your" blend in carter hall. sit back, relax and enjoy it! carter hall, originally an RJ Reynolds blend, has stood the test of time, and i expect it will be around for a long time. early in my pipe smoking days, i too thought i might be missing out and smoked a lot of different blends. about the only thing i was missing out on was money in my wallet. i kept coming back to to the codger burley blends like PA and CH. you might want to try some of the other middleton blends like Apple, Walnut or Ky Club. |

Louis (Gillie) Smoke what you like, like what you smoke. Yeah Aros tend to smell better than they taste, or more than they taste anyway. Most of us start out either with Aros or with plain burley types (CH, PA, etc.). Irony is that your burleys have a light taste, but are actually fairly heavy in Vit N. As to the English blends, they are an acquired taste, some acquire it quicker than others;-) You might try a Balkan blend, I find they have a little more natural sweetness than English blends. |

Do not ignore the "pricey" English blends either. They are nothing like the aromatics but oh golly are they good stuff! They don't have that sweet smell and they won't be enjoyed (generally) by those around you but what they do in your mouth and your nose if you puff them through your nose is fantastic! Happy smoking! |

I really wish somebody had reccommended Carter Hall to me when I started getting serious about the pipe. After trying every sweet, wet, goopy aromatic on the market, I finally decided to pick up a pouch of CH, and boy am I glad I did! IMHO, this is simply the best burley on the market. After "discovering" CH, I began sampling various burleys and burley blends, but I still keep on coming back to Carter Hall (and the occasional bowl of Butternut Burley). If you haven't tried some of this humble OTC tobacco, I reccommend you stop and pick up a pouch. You might just like it as much as I do. |
