Let me first say that I'm a former cigar smoker. I realize that smoking a pipe is a very different experience. There's the mechanics, collecting different pipes, tobacco, etc. and I love it. However, I've tried several blends that are reviewed as "med-full", like Westminster, Haddo's Delight, Dunbar, and My Mixture 965, and they don't taste full to me. Tonight I tried, The Churchwarden by Watch City and it was good, it had some cigar leaf in it. I know that there are a handful of blends that have cigar leaf in them but I don't think that is the direction I want to go or should I? So my question is, can you recommend any blends that you feel are FULL tasting? I'm game for just about anything. Actually, part of the fun has been tasting blends by trial and era, and I realize that I might have to step back so-to-speak, and develope my pallette more, but any suggestions would be great. Peace-Mike |

Hello Michael, Since you've decided to leave cigars behind, why smoke a pipe blend that tastes like cigars? Have you searched http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/ for suggestions? This is an excellent guide to many, many different tobacco blends. Also, may I suggest two excellent blends from Iwan Ries in Chicago? The blends are called 'Gourmet English' and 'Dr. Bradley'. Here's the URL for Iwan Ries. http://www.iwanries.com/ Cheers. -Ted |

All S&G Ropes - Brown, Black XX and especially Black XXX are full and strong to my taste. Not as strong but still full flavor is 1792. Penzance is full and rich IMO, as is Dunhill Nightcap. I've gingerly smoked both Perique and Latakia [meant as blending tobaccos] straight and while I wouldn't recommend it, they both certainly fill the bill AFA strong goes. After you ascertain the component that gives you some of the fullness you're looking for, you might want to try blending in some Perique or Latakia [a little at a time till you get it right]. I have a penchant for blends heavy on Lat and/or Perique I agree with you that taste testing various blends is part of the fun for me. Happy Hunting! Penzance in a Barontini |

Thanks ted, I've been to the Tobacco Reviews a lot.But the Iwan Ries blends I'll be checking out. To answer your question, I have very little interest in smoking blends that taste like cigar, I'd just smoke a cigar instead. But what I'm really looking for are some blends that are a great pipe tobacco and Full tasting. I appreciate your advice, I'll get back to you on the Iwan Ries stuff. Peace-Michael |

try to find Hacker's book "Pipesmoking: a 21st century guide". There, Hacker introduces his tobacco HPH scale, explaining how strong each tobacco blend is... of course he cannot cover all the blends and varieties that exist but it is a nice guide for the starter... |

Jim, I own that book and carry it with me at all times. Hacker throws out a lot of good suggestions but some are not being made anymore. Last night I smoked a bowl of Latakia Flake No. ( by Brebbia) and it was pretty good and full. I think what I might be looking for are blends where the Latakia are predominant. I will experiment with the ropes and DEFINITELY get some Penzance. Peace-Mike |

Michael, welcome to the briar and the group. If you're looking for FULL flavored tobaccos I can personally recommend: 1.)1792-excellent flavor, good nic content 2.)Cob Plug-Contrary to popular opinion, I find this to have only slight resemblance to 1792. Still a great blend. 3.)Just about any of the ropes (either SG or GH) All of the blends I have listed are very high quality tobaccos with a very full flavor and pretty high nicotine content. If one is not experienced with higher nicotine content it would be most advisable to take them slowly and build up to them. |

5 Brothers always provides a full-tasting kick in the teeth. The Amish around here love it. You can read some funny reviews about this full bodied Burley at tobaccoreviews.com. :-) |

For full flavor without Latakia I reach for G&H Dark Flake unscented. |
