Greetings all.

I've recently bought a pack of local tobacco called 'trisbi' or 'triezeby' which comes wrapped in unmarked brown paper. It costs very little (a mere six Philippine pesos), and tried it just earlier. The smoke was a bit musky/fruity but the effect it left on my throat was harsh (it made my voice hoarse for a while), and after some 10 puffs or so, it made me dizzy, and some three minutes later, it made me break out into a cold sweat. Added to that, it was hard to keep it lit since it went out every 25 seconds or so... I cannot say it was disgusting, I am simply curious as to why it caused dizziness and sweating since this is the first time I've ever had such an experience. The tobacco itself looks like a normal, country-side harvested type of tobacco, which, when removed from the packaging, is like a brick in shape, with a number of tobacco leaves pressed into said shape. You have to slice it with a knife and shred it for it to be fit for pipe-smoking. I've done a bit of research about said tobacco, and came up with little to nothing. The locals simply call it trisbi/triezeby and say it's a type of mountain-grown tobacco that the elders and sages here seem to be very fond of, and that, aside from being smoked from a pipe, it could also be used to make cigars, betel (tobacco-chew) and bidis (Hindu cigar/cigarette). Could there be an explanation for the dizziness/sweating? I do hope someone can enlighten me concerning this. Thank you.

Your humble friend,

Sherlockian Scholar.

I am not familiar with 'trisbi' or 'triezeby', but what you describe could be from very high vitamin N [nicotine] content.
Email me if you would like to trade some.

That's it: high nicotine!
I felt almost the same symptoms when I first smoked
Dunhill's "My Mixture 965". Try to mix it with a light blend or avoid it at all. Each of us has a different state of nicotine tolerance in his body...

It sounds like a Philippine version of Royal Yacht. I'd like to try some!

Gentlemen,

Thank you very much for that clarification. It is well appreciated. To reply to Mr. Mueller's question, I'd be more than willing to trade with you, if high-nicotine tobacco is to your taste. I prefer cherry or vanilla aromatics. A far cry indeed from Mssr. Holmes and his black shag... Thanks again, and good day.

Sherlockian Scholar.

Leon,
I do indeed have a preference for stronger blends, and have some aromatics I would like to trade.
Please click on my name to the left so we can discuss off line.

This might be of interest concerning ceremonial type tobacco :

Caution!
To Protect The Newcomer
Please know that Nicotiana Rustica, also known as Ceremonial, Shaman's, Aztec, Native or Wild tobacco etc. can have an up to 20 times higher nicotine content. At extreme high levels, nicotine becomes hallucinogenic and can also have fatal consequences. Those plants are even banned in some European countries. We do not sell Nicotiana Rustica. For smoking purpose, grow only Nicotiana Tabacum, which is the common smoking tobacco.
