I have just purchased PA&CH in 14 oz.cans. I have never smoked either of them and after reading this forum I think they might be for me I would like to try both of them. I read on here that if you open a tin be prepared to smoke it all. I intemd to open both tins as soon as they arrive. I have just purchased two new Brigham' for this occasion along with six new corncobs. Is there any special treatment for this tobacco after opening as it takes some time to smoke this amount of baccy? Thanks in advance----Mac

Mac,
As an owner of a fair number of Brighams I think I can state categorically that they don't mke a 14 oz. bowl pipe. So you are going to take a few smokes to make it through that much tobacco. I'm not sure which posting you have been reading, but my understanding is that the large tins do not tend to have as much added to hold moisture in the tobacco, as the tins are much more air tight until opened than any pouch. But the bigger tins allow alot more air exchange when opened and hence loss of moisture.
Suggestion is to get glass jars using a rubber gasket on the seal, my faves are the clamp down types, but the screw downs will work also. (These are readily avialable very economically in thrift stores, garage sales, flea markets, etc. Rubber gaskets were out but are available from stores selling canning supplies, viz grocery and hardware stores at this time of year.) Break the tins down into the jars, trying to not leave a lot of extra air space, and then it should keep quite well.
You can use humidity "buttons", but I find that the tins often don't react well to the extra moisture, and start rusting.
Which Brighams did you buy?

Go ahead and open them
PA and CH will stay fresh in their containers for a long time

just keep the paper circle on top of the tobacco
The top of the tobacco will dry a bit but just mix it around with whats under it and you will be fine

William, I buy Walnut, PA, CH, SWR, and several others in large tubs. I transfer some to a plastic tobacco pouch for smoking, press down the contents of the tub so it is packed firmly, put the lid on tightly, and the tobacco stays nice for many months that way.
