70% humidity is bad for storing pipe tobacco in non aluminum tins as they will rust. To be safe it's best to store pipe tobacco at 50% humidity or below. Factory tins are sealed tight so they have no problem with low humidity. Lots of folks just use what ever spare closet space they can rustle up or stack their tins in a plastic cooler and find an out of the way bit of floor. Cigars only in the humidor. |

Gentelmen, I am in the habbit of keeping my tobacco in sealed glass jars out of the sun of course and like it that way I have 25 jars as of this writing The first time that I went into a tobbaco shop at age 21 to begin my journey into the land of pipes and tobacco their in house blends were stored in this manner and it made a impression on me mind that you have to keep them out of direct sunlight has anyone had a simular experience? hope this helps, Kerry Lex Gerald |

I began using canning jars of differnt sizes to store my tobacco. I use a wax china marker to put the name and date on the top of the jar for long term aging or storage. If it is blend I smoke more often I may just drop it in the jar in the pouch it came in from the retailer. I use a nice leather tobacco pouch for trips away from the house. I keep the jars in the basement in a cuboard. It works very well. Hope this helps. |

Ideal RH for pipe tobacco is 61-64% RH which keeps it at 12-14% MBW, moisture by weight. 50% would have it in the 6-7% MBW range which is too low. This is what was stated to me by a well known blender when I discussed with him I was keeping my humidor at 50% RH. Since then I have keep all my open tins in a humidor at said RH but usually smoke them within two to three months and they are always as a fresh as the day I opened them. |
