I wanted to try a Virginia flake, and was too impatient to order anything online, so I ran to the local tobacconist and the only VA he had was an old tin of Ashton Gold Rush. I ask him about it, and being a cigar guy he basically reads me what's on the tin (Thanks, I really am literate, y'know...). All his other blends are aromatics. So-- am I experiencing a true Virginia here? What are the most Virginiany Virginias to try? |

Jeff: Gold Rush is an aromatic. Doesn't deliver true Virginia taste due to the flavor(citris)added to the tobacco. I like SG Full Virginia Flake,Astley's#109 or for a real honest no frills tobacco taste Peterson's Irish Flake. Mike |

Boy, I"m sure glad you confirmed it was an aromatic-- the citrus is very strong. Though I didn't completely mind the taste, it seemed to burn very fast and very hot, compared to most others I've tried. I have ordered a tin of the Irish Flake and SG Full Virginia. Thanks for the recommendation. Can't wait until they arrive! |

Jeff: I have on occassion mixed 50/50 Irish Flake and Gold Rush. If you've never tried Irish Flake it is somewhat strong. I donot recommend it on an empty stomach. Nicotine hit is 7/10. The Astley #109 or SG FVF is ok anytime. Enjoy Mike |

Mike, Wow! You (and others who have written similar things about Irish Flake) really weren't kidding about the nicotine hit. Got the flake yesterday, tried it last night, and through my messing around with trying to fold and twist and keep lit for the first time, I definitely found out the hard way about the strength... Just when I thought "this is great stuff, and the flavor is really nice..." I had to lie down immediately and curb the nausea for the next two hours, like the first time smoking a cigar or something. Jeff: I know what you mean. I had a similar experience my first time. I suggest you try it after a full meal and smoke it slowly, very slowly. It does impart a real full Virginia flavor. However donot under any circumstance inhale as it will make the room spin and nausea will follow shortly after you feel like your lungs are being torn from your from your chest cavity. It states on the tin that it is for the experienced pipe smoker. Mike |

Yes, it sure does... I suppose I have a little "experience" but perhaps now I am gaining the experience referred to on the tin! Finally got the SG, too, and I like it a lot. Easier to smoke, but I think I prefer the taste of the Peterson blend. I tried adding a little of the Ashton gold, and what I liked about that was it seemed to help get the flake lit. On another note, just tried a real easy-burning Boswell blend (in a new Boswell pipe) that seems like a really nice balance to me: Hunter's Choice. -Jeff |
