What is the difference, please? I have tried a search as I'm sure it must have been addressed before but it simply brought up many related threads, not the one I was looking for. I've come to the conclusion, thus far in my ten weeks of tobacco exploration, that Penzance is my yardstick - I love it - and it uses Cyprian. I also like Artisan's blend very much which I believe uses Syrian. So I'm having fun, but I wish I knew what the basic similarities and differences were between the two Latakias. It might help me in finding Shangri-la. Although I suspect I may have already found it. |

There is this article expressing G.L. Pease's opinion of the difference between the two Latakias: http://www.glpease.com/Articles/Latakia.html |

I quote from Iwan Reis page: "McClelland was very fortunate to have moved their supply of Syrian Latakia before the fire in 2004 which destroyed most of the world's supply. Syria is no longer producing Latakia, which makes this a rare treat for pipe smokers.Syria is where Latakia originated and at its best it is equal to but different from Cyprian Latakia." http://www.iwanries.com/McClelland_Syrian_Latakia_C400.cfm You have to read carefully the G.L.Pease page and may not reach this conclusion, although it assumes the knowledge that most of the tobacco from Syria was destroyed, and is no longer being produced, since the production was destroying the Syrian forests if i remember correctly. Inevitably this will lead to no Syrian Latakia at all, unless the government relents and allow production again. I suspect the blenders won't be using any Syrian they get but for their "best" efforts. |

My experience with both tells me that Syrian is tastier, richer, and considerably better endowed with nicotine. |
