I have a number of pipes and over the last 3 years I've been figuring out what smokes best in what pipe. Most of my tobaccos are Va/Per mixes. I'm wanting to venture into the word of latakia's after enjoying some of C&D's Mountain Camp.I'm worried though about the latakia affecting the way the other non Latakia tobaccos smoke in my pipe. If it is a second or third tobacco in the blend will it affect the pipe or should I devout a pipe strictly to any tobacco containing Latakia? Thoughts please.

Marlowe all my pipes are va or vaper pipes however I love Robusto Glp an I should have a dedicated pipe for it but I don't I smoke it out of the same pipe I smoke Briar Fox a va out of. The Robusto does ghost for a few bowls but I kinda like it. And I only smoke about 2oz of Robusto a month compared to 8oz off Briar Fox. I do not put it in any other pipes I wanted to smoke my two fav blends out of my fav pipe and it works for me you will find what works for you!

I heard what someone said a while back, and I agree. Some Latakia can be... well, greasy. Not all of it is like this, but for example... Pirate Cake and Star Of The East. These tend to release a lot of moisture and tar and can foul up your pipe. I've never had another unflavored tobacco that can leave such a strong ghost in your pipe. The only other time I had such a terrible ghost was when I smoked pure perique in a meerschaum, and even then, it didn't ghost the pipe; it ghosted my mouth. Every tobacco I tried the same day tasted like perique.

A bit late here, but yes, you probably should devote a pipe or two to the blends with latakia in them, so as not to ghost your Va pipes. I don't know about being "greasy", but it certainly can impart a taste to a pipe.
In my opinion, Engllish and Balkan blends are wonderfully stout for wintertime, but can sometimes be a bit too much in the warmer months. Much like the dark beers I drink in cool weather, while lighter brews are more refreshing in the summer.

I smoke Penzance in the morning, afternoon, and evening all through the year, summer included. :-)

Mel, for me, it's Blatter's Reserve or Peretti's Omega, anytime of the day, any season. (Sort of the times I enjoy good stout, like Samuel Smith or Victory, too.)

Wow Melvin, is it safe to say that you are a fan of Penzance? Any idea when it will be back in stock? I assume you probably have 100 lbs or so cellared so I suppose you are not affected by the current drought (lol). Todd, I recently came across Peretti's thanks to some advice from message board members, and while their Cuban mixture didn't live up to my expectations, I have fell in love with the Royal Blend. Oh and I second your love of stouts! Victory Storm King is a little too hoppy of a stout for me, but I love Samuel Smith's Oatmeal and Imperial, Oskar Blues Ten Fiddy, North Coast Old Rasputin, and Thirsty Dog Siberian Night with a nice hearty English or Balkan blend!

Cheers,
Scott

Scott,

The tins are available, just the bulk is out of stock. I don't know when the bulk will be available.

By the way, Pipe Smokers Lounge is for new threads that do not contain a question--see the announcement on top of that page.

Hey Melvin,
Thanks for the tip on the Penzance tins. I will have to stock up. I read the announcement on Pipe Smokers Lounge. Sorry for the mixup. Could you repost my thread in General Questions? I really want to make sure that if others on the board are going to the Richmond show, we will be able to organize some sort of general meet up time. Are you going to the show?
