I have recently gotten into pipe tobaccos blended with cigar leaf/wrapper. So far I have tried Bankers Blend, Gl Pease Robusto, and GL Pease Key Largo. I also have Pipeworks and Wilke Churchill on the way and am planning on getting McClelland Dominican Glory Maduro next week at my local tobacco shop. Just curious if anyone else enjoys these kind of blends and if so, is there anything else out there other than what is mentioned above that is worth hunting down?

Regards,

Hi, Scott. I like both of the Pease blends. They are both latakia blends, though. Haven't tried Bankers. I remember finding Dominican Glory Maduro to be a fine VA flake but feeling that the cigar leaf wasn't noticeable. This could be good or bad depending on your point of view. It was quite a bit of years ago, though, so I can't say for sure. I would stay away from plain Dominican Glory as it was extremely light (to me) without even a hint of cigar leaf. I remember a couple of Cornell and Diehl blends with cigar leaf that were good, such as Billy Budd and Grey Ghost. Haven't tried the Wilke or Pipeworks. Let us know what you find.

Happy puffin'.
Eric

I want to post a strong second vote for both Peretti's Cuban Mixture and Cornell and Diehl's Billy Budd, both of which I've been smoking regularly in recent weeks. Cuban Mixture is an old-fashioned 19th century blend that includes 6 or 7 other kinds of tobacco besides the cigar leaf; I find it pleasingly complex, and you can notice the cigar leaf. Billy Budd is a Latakia mixture that includes quite a lot of maduro cigar leaf that announces itself very clearly; it was originally blended for a customer who was very fond of full-bodied cigar blends, and it definitely delivers the goods on both counts. I should note that both blends are above average in nicotine content, but not, I would say, shockingly so.

I have often wondered whether one might just cut cigars up and rub them out to fill his pipe. I myself have never smoked cigars and perhaps am unaware of some difference in their makeup that would prevent this. Has anyone tried this with success (or failure)?

If it is possible, one cigar, especially if the liberated tobacco were mixed with something else (say Prince Albert), would certainly fill many pipes.

One of the workers at a tobacco shop I frequent does make his own blends with cigars. Actually, he said that whenever a customer buys a really nice cigar (i.e. Ashton) and uses the cigar cutter, the worker saves the clipped off end of the cigar and uses it to blend with. Not a bad idea....he claims he has had great results. At any rate, thanks to everyone for providing some insight regarding cigar blends. I am planning on checking out Peretti's Cuban Mixture after doing some further research on tobaccoreviews and on Peretti's home page. Looks like a great blends. Thanks again all!

Having seen my grandfather do it many years ago, I often smoke cigar tobacco in a pipe, sometimes just plugging an appropriate length (and diameter) of cigar in the pipe and lighting up.
A purist may shudder, but to each his own.
BTW, I have no compulsion to try one of the "pipe tobacco" cigars I've seen.

Just a little update on my end. Having almost finished up the Pipeworks & Wilke Churchill blend, I have found that high quality cigar leaf is used, but it falls a little short in the mix IMO. I did read; however, on tobaccoreviews, that someone who had the same opinion contacted Carole, who proceeded to create a custom blend of Churchill with increased amounts of cigar leaf and VA. Seeing as Churchill has plenty of potential, I may reorder Churchill and have her customize mine the same way. With respect to Peretti's Cuban, this blend fell way short for me. I cannot pick up any Latakia and the cigar leaf falls a little short too so I will pass on picking up anymore of this stuff (their Royal mixture is great though). Out of all the cigar blends I have tried, Robusto remains my favorite, which is why I chose to buy 10 tins of Nov 2002 Robusto to put in my cellar. Still haven't tried the C & D blends, but I am thinking that Billy Budd and Habana Daydream will be next on my list to purchase. Further updates will be forthcoming!

Glad hear this discussion, and to weigh into it with my two cents worth. My all time favorite pipe tobacco was Balkan Sobranie's Virginia # 10. I have never foumd a pipe tobacco with cigar leaf in it, or any other pipe tobacco, that could hold a candle to that one. Since Va. # 10 seems no longer to be available, I'm currently trying to reproduce the mixture I remember: matured Virginia, cigar leaf, and latakia, if I'm not mistaken. Right now I'm mixing them in the proportion of 4:1:1, respectively. The matured Virgina (Sam Gawith's Full Va. Flake), which though very fine is for me a bit sweet for smoking every day, is so rich that a dark and powerful cigar leaf doesn't blend well with it. Something like a light and dry Macanudo absorbs the flavors of the Va. better. The latakia cools and balances the mixture and is not at all obtrusive--barely detectable--although I use as much of it as the cigar leaf. If there is a commercial brand out there that approaches the great Virgina # 10, I'd like to hear about it. I'm also fond of Peretti's Cuban, but I like it best when mixed half and half(!)with latakia, perhaps to the horror of other cigar leaf enthusiasts.

You might want to give C & D's Purple Cow a shot. Both I and my wife, also a pipe smoker, love it. I'm smoking some right now in a meershaum.
