I recently purchased a 100 gram tin of Reiner Long Cut VA Flake and was displeased with it. I am thinking about aging it for a few years to see if it mellows out a bit. When aging long cut flakes, should I put the tobacco in a mason jar as is (in this case long cut flake) or should I rub it out first before cellaring in the jar. Any help would be appreciated.

You can leave them long and just roll them or cut them shorter. I wouldn't rub them out. Or you could just trade it for something you like.

Thanks for the advice Steve. I decided to just roll them up and stuff them carefully into a mason jar. Reiner is now cellaring, along with some other tobaccos that I will break into during the next 1-5 years. As far as trading goes, I think that Reiner will improve with aging, which is why I decided against trading. It wasn't horrible out of the tin, but I think that it could stand to mellow out a bit and maybe sweeten a little with aging. Right now it is just a little harsh for my taste. Anyhow, thanks again for the input

Another question in relation to this thread is whether or not I would be able to age a tin that has already been popped open. I have a 100 gram tin of McClleland Blackwoods Flake that I bought roughly 3-4 months ago. I have only opened it 4 or 5 times, but was considering putting it in a mason jar to age. Would I still have good results doing this even though the tin was popped a few months back? I am smoking a lot more English blends these days, so I really would prefer to set aside the VA blends for future use when I can appreciate them more.
