I'm interested in buying a nice Tolkien style pipe. Either an Aragorn/Strider or Gandalf/Wizard pipe. I've read discussions here about the MacQueen Pipes and the Vauen pipes. I am buying this pipe TO USE and I'd like to know, from other's experiences, which I should go with. I read that someone here had a MacQueen pipe and that after constant use, the mouth piece started to breakdown or fray. Any advice is greatly appreciated. -Josh | ||

Well, Nording does make a few pipes that are called "Lord of the Rings", but there are several companies that make good churchwardens. Nording even makes a pipe that comes with two stems, so its kind of like a churchwarden/bent pipe. I've never used a churchwarden, but I know a lot of other people on the board have. I'm sure with their help and the wonders of the internet you'll be able to find what you're looking for. Also, what are you willing to spend on this pipe? It's not a specific Lord of the Rings pipe, but if you are looking at churchwardens, consider a Stanwell Hans Christian Anderson. It comes with two stems, a churchwarden and a normal 1/4 bent, and mine is a very good smoke. They are not the cheapest churchwardens you can find, but they are a quality pipe. Dear Josh, I know that the cod father just got some very nice LOTR style pipes from JM Boswells. Freind of mine has had the white wizard for a month now and he's very happy with it. I've tried it a couple times, you need to draw a little longer but it's very smooth and cool even after the bowl heats up. Its' white finish helps make it even more unique to smoke. | ||

I just purchased MacQueen's The Wizard pipe and don't care for it. The issue is with the wooden stem. It's a bit large for me. I like to bite down a little while smoking and the large diameter feals awkward in my mouth. I am thinking of going with a Stanwell Hans Christian Anderson or maybe a Peterson. | ||

Here we go again . Mpre problems withthe MacQueen"s .I also bought one for use not just to look at but I also found that the bit was too big to be comfortable and not like the graceful arch of the "official" LOTR pipes by Vaun (I think) As Ellis said , I did just go through Boswell and have ended up with some amazing churchwardens . I also happen to know that they do have a couple extras that J.M. made while he was grinding mine out <I guess he got inspired) so now would be a good time to approach them if you want a Boswell. TCF Ever wonder why all the drive up ATM's have braile on the drivers side !!!HUMMMMM !!! | ||

hmm yeah well, hopefully i wont know the difference between a too big of a bit and not...lol...all ive ever used is one of those tester corn cob pipes....my first...but i think i will enjoy my Macqueen one for sure....i am not as experienced so it wont be too big of a problem ..pluss i really wana make my own peace pipe....so if it doesnt work out ill always have thta to look foreward to haha | ||

While waiting for my Wizard to be repaired and returned (yet again) I began using the Strider that I had as well . I found that the bit was a bit on the large size as well but it was comfortable to smoke . The bit started to seperate so I ended up sending my pipe down to the pipe Dr. and he is removing the split part and putting on an acrylic bit that will be both a more proper size but more hygenic as well as opposed to just having the wet split end absorbing who knows what . For the record, I don't own a Vauen made pipe, nor a MacQueen. I've heard that the Vauen pipes are of a nice quality. Vauen's history seems to suggest they have made quality pipes for some time now. Although pricey, the Vauen's have an acrylic bit, and I personally like acrylic stemmed pipes. However, the Vauen's are made to accommodate a filter, and as with other filter pipes, I would think should be smoked with the filter in place. Whether or not filter pipes makes a difference is up to you. Some people like them, some don't. However, another option you might consider, and one I'm more inclined to go with, is Jan Zeman's handmade 'lord of the pipes' line. While not your more "traditional" LOTR pipes, I find them to have a Middle Earth mystique. Not only do they exhibit stunning grain and design, but also they are priced right, IMHO. I personally can't question to Zeman's skill and quality, he makes some very nice handmade pipes, and I very much would welcome some into my collection. Thomas , may I make a suggestion. Contact J.M. or Gail Boswell and ask him to make you a wizard pipe. It will actually be less than a MacQueen and much better ,on top of that he will make what YOU want . I started getting a wizard made and ended up getting 3 when it was all done .  if he can do this he can make you something nice. i actualy enjoy my Macqueen Wizard....but ur right ...the stem is too bulky...but im cool wiht it for now i will smoke it for a time to come till i get a new pipe ...i do liek yours though Mr. cod father | ||

Rocas Foal, The thread Mr. Spear is refering to will show you the pic that is just here above of the three pipes I had made by J.M. Boswell .The 2 arched piprs are more like the wizard you are looking for .These are just awsome,just get in touch with Gail and tell her what you want or tell her you want one like they made for me. Hi Josh, I had the opportunity to examine my friend's Aragorn pipe by Vauen very closely. The result was very disappointing. Ever since that day I'm convinced that Vauen contracted some Orks to manufacture these pipes. The bowl showed not less than 6 major putty fills - one looking very nicely like the Lake of Kheled-Zāram. The mortise gazes at you dark and frightening like Sauron's eye and it's drilling hole is as huge as the Black Gate of Mordor. It's surely prepared to take 13mm filters. In case Vauen is heading to bring some out. Resulting from that the remaining walls of the shank are extremely thin and seem to be fragile as Lampas bread. The air-hole ends about 2.5mm above the ground of the bowl. So sooner or later the Dead Marshes will come into being there. All in all I think the whole bowl is as terribly as the Cavernes of Khazad-dum where Gandalf the Grey fought with the Balrog. Best LOTR inspired pipes I know. |
