Close to twenty years ago I bought a Peterson pipe that is made of a fired meerschaum. I am trying to find more information on it now without much luck. Does anyone here know anything about this pipe? Are they still made? I checked Peterson's website and looked around the web but have not found much.
Any insight is welcome.

The light and pourous structure of a meerschaum, makes a cool and always 'broken in' smoke from the first pipe. The only reason to "fire" a meer may be to add some color, or to claim it pre smoked. I am not sure if firing was ever a process used, but I see no advantage other than astetics.

It was described to me a "fired" by the shop owner. This was done not only for aesthetics, but you can handle the meerschaum without worry of the oils from your hands discoloring it. I will post a picture later.

As a side note, it is a wonderful smoke.

hi michael! your pipe must be a peterson although the shape does not match anything at all in any of my shape charts from peterson,in fact peterson only made maybe 8 or 9 shapes both in the standard shapes and the system shapes combined.Don't know what else to tell ya but if it has the "P" it's most likely a pete.I'll do some more diggin' and get back to ya CHEERS!

Actually, the pipe in the photo ISN'T a Peterson. It's a Pioneer. They were the foremost American meerschaum pipe maker for many years. I had one in the late '60s - early '70s; I gave it to a friend.

Yes, typical pioneer stem. Great meer pipes, have some myself.

I am in no way a Meerschaum expert but I carved a meerschaum pipe a while ago. In the kit's instructions it read that you must apply beeswax to the outside then put it in your oven to make it harder. Perhaps this is the 'firing' that was mentioned. I've held meerschaums that are soft and some that are hard and seemed fired like mine. It wasn't at 'firing' temps just mid oven temps but it did make it noticably harder/stronger.
