Inside diameter and height would certianly be one factor, but many pipes, especially plateau top freehands, have small diameter bowls while the outside dimensions are rather large and could be considered a large bowl. I have a Peterson Hand Made Brandy shape that has a 7/8" diameter by 2 1/2" deep tobacco chamber and bowl walls that are almost 1/2" thick. That qualifies as a "big bowl" in anybody's book. I also have a Prebem Holm freehand with almost the same tobacco chamber dimensions that has bowl walls that are less than a 1/4" thick and looks like nothing more than a group 5 size. One thing I have discovered in the world of briar is that there are no "exacts". |
