Gentlemen-
I'm considering bidding on some pipes, specifically a Peterson and a Savinelli. I've read about Peterson's system of catching moisture in an extra chamber of the briar, but --
--is Savinelli's system different? I've seen references to its balsa filters- is that what catches the moisture? BTW, this pipe is a Savinelli Madera.
Thanks fo any help!

Yes, the balsa traps the moisture. The problem is that you can't run a pipe cleaner through a Savenille with the balsa or the adapter in place.

I have a Savinelli Bing's Favorite with the balsa system and it works pretty well but Perry is right, you can't run a pipe cleaner through it. You also have to change the filter after every smoke in my experience, but I am a clincher who tends to smoke very wet. It comes with an adapter so you can eliminate the filter if you don't like it. Sometimes I use the filter and sometimes I don't, it depends on my mood. I will say this, IMHO the Savinelli system works much better than the filters used in Dr. Grabows and similar pipes. I never use the filter in my Grabow.

I bought a Peterson dry system pipe and wasn't too impressed with it. It didn't seem to smoke any dryer than a standard style pipe and not being able to run a cleaner through it without removing the stem was a hassle.

I'm with Melvin when it comes to the best shape pipe for me, a straight stem billiard or similar.

Hmm... Thanks, guys. Though, I don't think the filter would get in my way, since I don't usually run a cleaner through while I'm smoking.

Other than Grabow's, I smoke Savinelli's, a number of which are constructed to use the blasa filter. I don't like the balsa filters, because they become saturated quickly and flavor the subsequent smokes unless changed very often. Instead of the balsa, I use the Grabow filters, although sometimes you have to cut a bit off an end to make them fit. I might smoke a pipe on a once-a-day basis for up to five smokes before changing the filter. With a Grabow filter in a Savinelli pipe, no problem. I enjoy using a filter, otherwise I get concerned about where all the brown gunk goes without one.

But wait-- more importantly-- is every Savinelli made to take the balsa "system" filters? Or, do I need to see "system pipe" in its name?

Dave - Not all Savinelli's take the balsa system filter. None of the pipes made before the late 1970s take them. Currently, almost all of the pipes they make today come with the balsa system. Note, there is also the Dry System, which incorporates a well at the bottom of the bowl to trap moisture. All of these Dry System pipes can also use the filters, but a balsa filter pipe does not necessarily have the Dry System well. Everything you need to know about the Savinelli's currently available can be found at http://www.savinelliusa.com. Enjoy.
