I received a Kaywoodie Relief Grain from cupojoes.com today (great service, by the way). Is this a briar pipe? It feels like a plastic material to me (brylon?). I know Kaywoodie is in the same corporate family as Yellobole which does use synthetic materials. I wasn't aware that Kaywoodie used that also. If this is briar, it sure is a light weight.

Hi Walter. No, Kaywoodies are imported briar pipes. I have a relief grain myself and it's one of my favorites. The carved bowl finish seems to smoke cooler than smooth finishes. Yes, they are lighter weight than they used to be. They also have softer stems and the logo is no longer inlaid like the older ones unless you buy a much more expensive one. I have a few Kaywoodies dating back to the 1970's that are noticeably heavier but my relief grain smokes just as good. The Red Roots are nice too. There's a nice selection at www.pipeshop.us
