I started smoking a pipe a little over two weeks ago, starting with a $5 cob. I didn't particularily like the cob due to the fact I could taste burning cob, part of the problem was that I smoked to fast at first (still do a little), but even later I still got a little of the taste. I retired the cob and bought a store branded Bent Billiard briar for $25 and immediately found the taste to be better. I'm smoking 1-2 bowls a day and have decided to purchase a second pipe. Any advice on brands within a decent price range (I'm a college student, so $40-50) and different types, such as a Meer or Clay? Currently Smoking: Royal English

In the $40-$50 range, it's hard to beat a Boswell. I have two of them and they are both great smokers. Check them out at www.premierpipes.com and www.boswellpipes.com. If you order through the Boswell site, your order may be delayed a bit as J.M.'s mother is very ill right now. The other place I would suggest checking out would be www.frenchyspipes.com. Frenchy is a great guy that goes out of his way to take care of his customers. Tell him what you want and he'll help you out. smokey

I just bought a nice CAO Meerschaum today. I love it! It was only $55. Smokes cool and great! I also have 2 cobs that I like pretty good. They smoke better than the two $20 briars that I have. But the meerschaum is awesome!!! |

Dear Joseph, Welcome to the Brotherhood of the Briar ! It is a perfect time for you to learn to smoke a pipe. A good pipe and good tobaccos will really enhance your experience in a hurry. Although there are many good pipes out there, I always suggest that a beginner look seriously at getting a Boswell pipe. They are a family owned shop in Chambersburg PA. http://www.boswellpipes.com/ They make a great pipe for under $50. You can pay almost twice that much for a similar quality pipe in a shop or over the internet. I encourage beginners to get a bent or 1/2 bent. They have a great selection and they can't show them all on their website. If you use my email, I'll be happy to send you some photos of some recent Boswells. They also make a great bunch of tobacco blends. Far better than anything that you will find at the drug store and at a lower price. I'll be happy to forward you their full list. When you have a style of pipe that you want to get you email them and call them. They always throw in free tobacco samples with their pipes Berry Cobbler...wow.... So Joseph, welcome to the Brotherhood of the Briar. We all want to support you and get you off to a great start. If I can be of more help contact me. E. Spear |
