Hello, I'm fairly new to pipe smoking (been smoking for about a month). I picked up a LOTR style pipe becuase I thought it looked cool, decided to try some tobacco in it after going to a tobacco shop with a friend and really enjoyed the experience. Anyhow, about two weeks ago I picked up a Dr. Grabow Grand Duke so that I had something a bit smaller. I've noticed that when I finish smoking it, there's about a quarter inch of dottle left in the bottom of the bowl and it's visibly wet. I only smoke one bowl in it every two to three days. Is there something I'm doing to cause this? Is it the pipe? Is there anything I can do to prevent it? Also as a side note, I don't smoke it with a filter and I clean out the stem and shank with pipe cleaners after every smoke and shake around the ash to create a layer of cake. I smoke a tabacco called "Nordic Mist" that I get from a local shop.

You didn't mention what blend you are smoking. Certain aromatics or heavily cased baccy's for instance will often have extra wetness in the bottom. Also, fast puffing will increase moisture and will likely lessen as your technique settles down. Don't worry too much about it for now as you are diligently cleaning. Just make sure you let it completely dry out between smokes.

Thanks for the quick reply. Sorry I haven't gotten back sooner, I was on a diving trip this weekend. Would Nordic Mist be the blend? There's no name brand on it, the guy that runs the shop just keeps the different flavors in jars. Do you think the tobacco might contribute to the problem?

I've found that damp tobacco mixes contribute to wet dottle. I used to use those little disks to keep my tobacco moist, but have found I get a much cooler and less "bubbly" smoke now that I just keep my tobacco in an airtight container and don't add any moisture.

Could be the fact that it's a Grabow... I made the mistake of buying two of those (and had a few others given to me by a well intentioned friend), and each and every one of them smokes wet! It seems to me that the draft hole sits way too high in the bowl, rather than drawing from the bottom like they should... My my 2-cents' worth...
