I have noticed bags of small brass screens for sale lately. Are they used as a filter or can they be used in any pipe as way to stop ash from going up the stem of your pipe? Or is there something else that I have overlooked ?

Thanks TCF
Ever wonder why all the drive up ATM's have braile on the drivers side !!!HUMMMMM !!!

I believe the screens are primarily intended for use in devices made for "alternative" smoking substances.

However, I have read, on this very message board, of legitimate pipe smokers using them in special situations. One that comes quickly to mind was a suggestion to use a screen to keep loose tobacco from blocking the airhole in a Lepeltier Clay. I think someone else suggested using screens in cobs as well. I even bought a pack of screens in case I found a use for them.

If you really are interested in knowing why there are braille drive-up ATMS, look here: http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a4_010.html

Cool Dan , thanks for the info on both topics I was unsure about the screens and guess that you could use them for legitimate bassy also.
As far as the braille question it was just something to pose a thoughtfor others who read it . Actually I did know why it is done ,being disabled myself and having spent 10 yrs in a wheelchair and acting as an advocate for acessibility issues for the disabled , I also have 2 family members who are blind ,one you may have heard of who is a singer /songwriter "Terry Kelly "

That aside thank-you for taking the time to find the info for my I appreciate the time that you put forth on my part !! TCF

I tried a screen in a cob. It didn't work too well. If I had tried it in a soft bottom cob after it burnt in, it may have worked, but I didn't try again.

Doubt that I will.

I tried a screen in a pipe with a slightly burned airhole in the bottom which was so coned shaped from burnout that it let tobacco pass through or clog so I tried a brass screen and that needed thorough cleaning or replacing after a bowl full, it too clogs near the end or did in this tall billiard of mine. I know it's off topic but I must reply; I've asked three bank personel why the ATMs have brail and they all told me that most drive through ATM's are identical to walk up ATM's. Not that standardizing codes don't also have something to do with this.
