Hello Group, Thanks for all the information on my last post. Being new to pipe smoking I am currently having the problem of hearing air when I puff on my pipe. What I mean by that is I can hear the air being drawn in i.e., the sound when you suck on a straw. I'm certain that it isn't suppose to be doing that and I'm certain that it has to do with the way that I've been packing it; which is also probably a bit wrong as well. Any advice for a newbie Michael |

If you hear sucking, then you're drawing too fast. I've been smoking about a month now and I still draw too fast at times and don't always pack great. Take a look at the Frank Method of packing. I believe the Seattle Pipe Club has the video on their website. If you can't find it, email me and I can send it to you. 'Good pipe weather' -Flanders

This problem has happened to me in a couple of different forms: -drawing too fast, like Joseph said -not maintaining a proper tobacco density; this can be both a packing and tamping issue -owning a poorly made pipe Do you find that your pipe 'whistles' as soon as you start smoking, or does it take awhile before it starts to happen? If it is happening from the getgo, then you may not be packing the tobacco tight enough, or you may be drawing too fast and too hard. Once the pipe is lit, I find that taking long, gentle 'sips' provides a cool, flavourful, nonwhistling smoke. I also found when I was starting out, that as I drew near the last third of the bowl, my pipe would start whistling. If this sounds familiar, tamping down when the whistling starts should solve the problem. Make sure you don't tamp too hard though, it could lead to some serious tongue bite. Last but not least, if it is a really cheap pipe the problem might just be poor workmanship. The first pipe I ever bought whistled on me like mad, and as I bought other pipes, and learned some of the finer points of pipesmoking, I realized the problem was not with me. Hopefully this is not the case. Happy puffing, Joel "Without sin, the universe is a Solemn Game: and there is no good game without rules."

I'll tell you how to pack like my tobacconist taught me when I bought my first pipe a while back. 1)Think of Mom on the first pinch. Put enough to fill the whole bowl and use your thumb to pack it down. This is the key...you don't push mom very hard do you? Or she'll push back right? So only use loving pressure on the first pinch! 2)The second pinch think of superman. He can't see or breathe through lead walls can he? Neither can you so don't pack the second pinch so hard that it's tight, but more pressure than you used on mom. 3) For the last pinch think of Dad. He's always firm with us right? So pack it down fairly firm in the pipe. We always get away with more from Dad so go ahead and take an extra pinch and push it in there, just to show out! Now take a puff, you should not feel much, if any resistance at all. If it burns too hot, you packed too tight. If it keeps going out you didn't pack tight enough. Remember think of Mom, Superman, then Dad and you should be pretty happy with the results. Good luck and happy puffing. |

Guys, Thank you for all your help...I found out what part of the problem was...on the stem there was a little rubber ring and it was getting in the way of the air flow. Therefore, last night I took it off and then went and had a bowl of Boswells "Christmas Cookie," and following the advice given by you guys it worked quite well. Now all I have to do is work on the breath technique, but that's for another post Michael |
