Try keeping it out of your mouth unless actually smoking for the first 1/4 bowl or so.. if it's only in the beginning, that should help. Are you puffing OUTWARD on the pipe between puffs? If so, that would be it. "The pipe draws wisdom from the lips of the philosopher.." -William Makepeace Thackeray, from The Social Pipe

Eric, Puffing too quickly will cause most tobacco to burn too hot, and when tobacco burns too hot excessive smoke often rises from the bowl. Since this problem happens mostly at the beginning for you, it sounds like you may be puffing a bit too hard when trying to get the tobacco fully lit. Try slowing down, even when lighting up. This means that you should allow the bowl go out, then tamp lightly, then light again, and repeat until you are able to get the bowl lit. It usually takes me at least three matches to get a bowl fully lit, and I've been smoking a pipe for ten years. You've got to get a smooth, flat surface on the top of the tobacco before it will fully light, and this can require a bit of time and patience. Further, different tobaccos and cuts require different lengths of time to light. Additional matches does not necessarily mean you have problems with your technique! Dropping some very fine grains of tobacco on the top of the unlit bowl before trying to light can help, especially if you're smoking a flake or ready-rubbed cut. Be patient and slow down--the mantra of a pipe smoker! And the solution to so many piping problems. Hope this helps, Earl |

I think Earl covered it all but you may also want to consider if the bowl the the pipe is bent away from your face or perpendicular to it and how long is the stem of the pipe? I had a 4.5" bulldog that just let smoke waif into my face relentlessly. If you think you are cursed maybe try a Churchwarden. |
