It seems to take me forever to finish a bowl of tobacco. I read on here how people are having 3 maybe 4 bowls a day. I wouldn't stop smoking if I were to try 3 bowls!

For reference it takes me an hour to a little bit longer than an hour to finish one square of PS Luxury Twist Flake. I smoke at a pace that keeps the pipe bowl nice and warm but not hot enough that I have to remove it from my hand.

So how long does it take you?

Close to two hours in my big bowl GBD or Stanwell. Twenty - forty minutes in a cob.

I'm the same. It takes me a long time to smoke a medium size pipe and I cant understand how people enjoy smoking a large pipe. It would bore me to tears.

Hard to say, because it depends so much on the tobacco and because I usually let a bowl sit and go cold several times before I finish it. I smoke seven to ten large bowls per day, so I suppose most of them don't take anywhere close to an hour. Folded flakes last longer for me than loose cuts.

Chris-

Depends on bowl size and tobacco. I smoke Penzance, most of the time in a Dunhill group 5 or equivalent. Average is around 70 minutes per bowl.

From your description, I'd say you are smoking correctly.

I agree with Bill that it depends on the bowl size and the tobacco cut. I don't have any pipes with extra large bowls, so it usually takes me 35-45 minutes to smoke my pipe all the way to the bottom.

I generally smoke two bowls in the evening after work. One when I come home (with a nice glass of wine), and another just before retiring for the night (ususally with another glass of wine). I tend to smoke four bowls a day on the weekends. (Don't ask about the wine, though!)

"Depends on bowl size and tobacco." Yes, indeed it does.

The average billard shape has a bowl that holds about 3 grams
so that means ,depending on puffing speed, about 45 min to
an hour for the average smoker and an average density tobacco.

IMO it's the tobacco density that is the real determining factor.
Some like Carter Hall & Prince Albert burn like crazy and others
like a tightly packed flake burn s-l-o-w.

I mainly smoke at work so I only put enough in to last 15 min. whick I smoke 3 bowls at work.
On a full bowl which I do when at home or when it's my dart night it will last me 30-45 min.

A full bowl usually takes me 30-40 minutes, unless I'm enjoying a Virginia Flake, and then I smoke it for about an hour and I still have some left that I have to dump out.

I recently received my SG FVF in the mail on Friday and folded up a nice flake and smoked a full bowl. Took about 2 hours. Then on Saturday I had some Lane 1Q (full bowl) and it took just a little over an hour. I see what you mean about the tobacco times varying. I appreciate all the feedback... thought I was taking forever to finish a pipe but looks like I was right on!

Hmmm, I think I'm smoking too hard. 15-20 minutes a bowl, although I don't really time them. Longer on my deep freehand.

I think it's really down to what you enjoy; I find that a smoke can be boring with English blends unless some faster puffing is employed; however, I find the exact opposite with Virginias— too fast and the smoke will taste like sweaty socks. Whatever you enjoy is what's best.

I usually am at it for 40-60 minutes at a whack. Sometimes I'll reload two, three or four times if I'm really lost in thought but not often do I do this. The size of the pipe makes a difference but usually I use a smaller to mid range bowl.

I find it hard for a bowl to last 20 minutes. I average 2 or 3 very small pulls every 5 seconds or so. I would find it tough to go a half a minute per draw. This obviously leads into my cake forming problems, my hot bowls and some recent burnout concerns. Maybe I should try some relaxing techniques, oh no, thats what the pipe is for...

Some days I smoke 3-4 bowls, some days I don't have the chance to really smoke a bowl at all. Some days I smoke a mini cob when I have a limited amount of time.

A Savinelli Autographe stack I have takes about 3 to maybe 4 hours to smoke all the way down, usually with a pause at some point where it goes out for a little while... say half an hour. So maybe 3/3.5 hours.

An average pipe, maybe an hour?

Mini cob smoke time seems to be highly dependant on the tobacco. Some burn like crazy and I'm done in 15-20 minutes. Other tobaccos last over an hour in it.

While on the subject, I have to say that I really do enjoy having at least one mini corn cob pipe laying around... very handy if you only have a small amount of time to savor your favorite baccy, and really feel like smoking it. And you can't beat that with a stick for the price of 2 bucks!

Like a lot of people here, it really depends on the pipe. I smoke the most when I'm writing. The hand made, larger bowl pipes take me about 2-3 hours. Some of the smaller ones take about 30 minutes. But sitting, writing, and reading, it seems to epitomize the lifestyle of pipe smokers. But I try to keep things at about one bowl per day, and a rotation currently of 10 pipes, though I have over 20.

It takes about 30-45 minutes to finish one bowl of my Dr. Grabow, and I usually smoke about 3-4 bowls a day.

I'm surprised at how quickly some people seem to be smoking. I smoke at least one hour with my smaller bowls and 2.5 - 3 hours with the larger ones. I smoke a variety of tobaccos. Matured Va., either straight or mixed, burns most slowly for me. Burley burns very quickly, too quickly for my taste. Mixing in Latakia slows down the burn a bit, but not much. Occasionally, I'll have a very nice smoke that lasts longer than 3 hours. I smoke an average of only one pipe per day, with one day off per week. So, sometimes none at all for a couple of days. On other days one, two, or, once in a blue moon, three. Never more than that, but no need either. I don't get a charge out of loading the pipe. I like to get down to business--which in my case is usually writing or reading--and focus on my project for several hours without the interruption of switching to a new pipe.

My smoking has been cut way back because of my wife's emphyzema. I usually smoke one bowl after she's gone to bed and is in the bedroom with the door closed. That gives the smoke all night to dissipate. There are so many variables that it's hard to give a time. I just try to smoke as slow as I can to get maximum enjoyment out of my tobacco. I don't worry about relights, either. I have never been a "one match" smoker.

I've been smoking occasionally for about 6 months now. I've been on this website learning to pack and smoke properly for about 3, and I go from 30 minutes or so with burley to about an hour with an English blend with a few relights for each.

Between 1 hour and 1 1/2 hour depending on the bowl size.
I do have a Brigham Sportsman with a giant bowl, looks like one has to fill it with a bucket ;),
Which goes for 2 hours.
Because I fill this pipe a couple of days before I smoke it to get the tobacco really on the dry side, it does in comparation to a pipe with a "Normal" bowl size not last as long as one would expect to finish a bowl.

Ive learned that I must be a fast smoker cause Im usully done with a regular bowl in 15-20 and a LARGE bowl in 25-30 and Im smoking about 5-6 bowls per day. For me I find I taste and enjoy the tobacco more when its burnin hot, although I have never been able to smoke a bowl to the bottom without tamping, when the ash ontop is still light and fluffy I find it harder to keep my bowl roaring.I hear alot about tongue bite with my technique but only once in the first year of smoking did I have any real rememberable tongue bite.I know this isnt the method most consider to be proper but its how I enjoy smoking and in the end thats what its all about ejoyment.

Significant factors relative to this thread are:

1. size of smoking chamber, specifically inside depth with circumference measured across inner top, and if conical

2. tobacco blend

3. thickness of cake

4. indoors or outdoors

5. preference for dry or slightly moist tobacco

6. activity when smoking, including whether or not the pipe is allowed to rest while smoking

7. type of pipe, such as corncob, meerschaum or briar
