I am a fairly new smoker and have had an inexpensive but nice briar. Well I just came back from an overseas trip and the duty free had a pipe I couln't pass up. I go a Peterson Killarney 65 and a tin of Perterson Sunset Breeze. Both together didnt come to $70.00. The box says no break in required. Is this true or should I do something special to it before I smoke it? Its almost to pretty to use!! |

Hello Steve. I personally just endure the pain of breaking in a new pipe (especially Peterson pipes ;). But some suggest cleaning off the pre-carb/staining inside the bowl (and shank) with alcohol, or add a concoction of your own to it, such as honey or something else sugary to help create a good cake and reduce the foul taste. |

Hi Steve - You can go ahead and smoke it. However, to be safe, it's probably a good idea to get building your own cake in the pipe. Fill it about half way and don't let the pipe get hot while smoking slowly all the way to the bottom. Let the real cake build for a half dozen bowls or so. IMO, it's better to be safe than sorry and it's really not that much of an inconvenience in exchange for many years of trouble free smoking! |

I just fill the pipe up to just below the rim and smoke it slow to the bottom of the bowl. It works for me |

You need to smoke Sunset Breeze slowly. Fresh from the tin, the overwhelming smoke aroma is raspberries. Dry it out a bit and the almond comes through more. However, this stuff will ghost a pipe pretty fast. I smoked one bowl of it in a Savinelli, and the taste of Sunset Breeze persisted through almost two subsequent bowls of Grousemoor. I'm getting a separate pipe for this, and my untried Connoisseurs Choice. Sunset Breeze cakes like mad by the way! |

Thanks for all the information. I went and got a tin of Peterson Sherlock Holmes just for this pipe and tried the Sunset Breeze out of my less expensive briar. Both tobaccos are excellent a little bite from both if i smoke to quickly. |

Hi Steve building up the cake takes a while I have a peterson also no filter in them or most of them and I used to smoke sunset breeze and sweet Kilarney mostly to please the wife and others, however since now I smoke for myself I find Conder longcut dose a better if not more quickly a job of building up a cake, only thing is u need a dedicated pipe for conder once in the pipe never ever leaves it, have not seen any reference made to conder in the forum would like to know if in fact anyone smokes it beside myself and what they think or know about it, good luck with the pipe steve anyway. |
