It is a mixture of sawdust and a nylon / plastic resin. |

If you follow this link to a pipe sales site , there is one for sale and it is said to be made of a briar/nylon composite. http://www.turkishmeerschaum.com/html/Ebony-Brylon-Yello-Bole.html It doesn't sound very appealing to me , but who knows , maybe they are OK. |

Brylon is compressed saw dust I have had a couple they are heavier than briar and burn hotter I personally dont think they are worth the money when I can get briar for the same or less money |

I think you will find that Brylon was a combination effect, the shortage of briar shortage during WWII and the drive to improve everything by making out of the miracle product plastic. During WWII pipe makers were using all sorts of wood to make pipes in the US (US briar, apple, cherry, etc.). The drive to improve and modernize the manufacturing of pipes also gave us Falcons, with their briar bowls and metal (aluminum usually) bowlholder/stems, and similar products. The one I find interesting is "the pipe", which was an offshoot of rocket nozzle research. See: http://www.thepipe.info/history/index.html for a history of "the pipe". They sold millions of these, and they sold at a premium to most briar pipes when they came out! Now you can pick up as many as you want in the $10-20 range. |
