Hello, I'm new to pipe smoking - I've only been at it for a couple of months but I'm enjoying it immensely. At home, that is, where I've amassed a nice rotation ensuring that all briars are rested for 48 hours after use.
The problem is - I spend about 1/4 to 1/3 of each year travelling thanks to my work and I must travel fairly light - there are no porters to lug my trunks :-)
So I'd like to put a travel kit together. The little knowledge I've garnered thus far would suggest that a couple of meers might be best, but the two I have are both quite large in comparison to my briars and they were not advertised as such - are meers generally bigger?
Plus I think I prefer my favoured briars.. so far.
Are there certain types of briars that travel better, can be used more often? Meer lined maybe? I think I'm fairly certain that our boys in the trenches with their army mounts were not travelling with multiple pipes... do army mounts travel best? (I'd love an excuse to buy a couple)
Tobacco wise I should be fine and I look forward to visiting the great tobaconnists in the cities I stop in (is there a thread listing thee?), but I'm fairly sure I can survive on Penzance.
That's about it. Thanks in advance for any help.

Lloyd, I'm not sure I understand your quandary.

You can buy small travel bags that can accommodate various quantities of pipes. I don't know how many bowls you smoke each day, but your 48 hour rule isn't etched in stone. I think it's fine to smoke a pipe again after it's completely cooled down. And certainly 24 hrs. is more than adequate in my book.

Meerschaum is fine, if you like it. However, it is delicate and prone to chip, crack, and break much more easily than briar. They might be at greater risk of damage with travelling.

Lloyd,

The Peterson military style bent system pipes do travel well. They have the expansion chamber and the well to catch the condensation that the expansion promotes. I find i can smoke several bowls with no ill effects as long as I watch the heat of the bowl.
I will warn you not to check pipe bags through on airlines, I have had pipes disappear from my luggage, and now only pack them in my carry on luggage.
