I'm trying to find information about a dead company that was originally in Ohio. The company was WARD-NIMROD COMPANY. It was founded by Ashley F. Ward, Jr. I'm not sure of the start date, but their first patent was 1946 for a pipe lighter, called the Nimrod Pipe Lighter. The patent number is 243225. All the Patent Office has is the original patent filed, which was approved in 1947. It's original address on the advertising was "Dipt. 36-G, 2961 Jessamine St., Cinti. IS, Ohio". I show another address at "Cincinnati 14, Ohio". I have no idea what the "14" was for. They manufactured two types of lighters: The Nimrod Pipe Lighter, and the Nimrod Commander. If you could provide any information, it would be most helpful. I realize that a lot of this is vague, but I'm hoping someone will adopt this as a challenge and can give me anything at all. |

I had forgotten about that lighter! I first smoked a pipe more than 30 years ago and had one of those. As I recall it was a very effective pipe lighter - and quite the conversation piece. Like Zippo you had the fluid smell issue but it worked as designed and was unique. Today I just use a Zippo with a pipe chimney but if I saw one of those again I would probably buy it if just for the novelty. Thanks for the memory! |

Jack: The Nimrod Pipeliter (sic) holds a special place in my heart, as I fondly recall my Grandfather using one to light his well-used Falcon billiard. Sadly, it dissappeared with his passing; however, years later after I took up the pipe I found and purchased one from the old Darby Pipe Shop in Mattoon, Illinois. That Pipeliter is probably as old as I, but still works well and is a pleasant reminder of my childhood. In my estimation Ashley Ward was an entrepenurial genius, as his invention of the Pipeliter and, later, his purchase of the patent for what became the line of Nimrod pop-up campers attests. Here is a link to a Website with historical information regarding both: http://www.popupcamperhistory.com/nimrod.html, and I hope you find it to be useful. Good luck, and good smoking! |

I have a brass Nimrod ashtray commemorating a dealers convention. I'm not sure how old it is, but I bought it off of eBay when I was still in college. It's kind of a neat piece that goes along with the other Nimrod Pipeliters I have. |

I owned several Nimrod lighters in the 70s and 80s, and I think I still have one stashed away somewhere but can't find it. They were a great design but didn't seem to me to be quite as windproof as Zippo pipe lighters. I didn't know they were made here in Ohio. |
