Towards the end of the smoke i got a horrible wet tar taste which spoiled the whole thing, what causes this.

The Bowl got so hot i couldnt keep hold of it, is this normal.

Thanks in advance

davy Tee:

Seems like you are puffing way to frequently and fast--slow it way down--Pipe smoking is a leisurely pastime--Enjoy!

What kind of pipe? Briar? Old? New?

What kind of tobacco?

How'd you pack it?

Guess that would depend on how moist your tobacco is and how hard your puffing and what type of pipe your smoking out of. Could be a lot of things. My guess would be your tobacco. How often do you clean your bowl....use pipe cleaners? If it is a new pipe you have to go through a break-in period also. The hot part of that is probably how hard your puffing. Clean your pipe first and slow it down a little and see what happens.

Welcome back. Your experiences are normal. Work through it and you will not regret it. I,too, returned to the pipe just a few months ago. I stll have two humidors of expensive imported cigars that I may never get back to since I am enjoying my pipes and tobaccos so much.

To your issues: "Wet tar taste" You don't say what tobacco you are smoking or what pipe. That can matter a lot. Generally cheaper, generic, drug store tobacco has additives that extend shelf life and moisture but result in that accumulation near the end of the smoke. If the tobacco is an aromatic it is more likely to behave like this, too. Again it is due to an additive, in this case the additive that causes the aroma. Slow smoking - allowing the residue to burn off - can help. You might also want to run a pipe cleaner down the stem when you detect moisture. You will either taste the moisture or hear a gurgle telling you it is coming.

The hot bowl is also typical and usually has one of a couple of causes. 1. New pipes don't yet have any cake built up in the bowl. The cake helps insulate and dissipate the heat. 2. Fast, hard, smoking also heats the bowl up. Not many pipes are meant to be smoked like a cigarette or cigar and it is an adjustment that took me time to make. 3. Loosely packed tobacco can really heat up. Even if you packed it firmly at the beginning it needs to be tamped down periodically or you sill be heating up a lot of air that will burn your bowl and your hand.

WOW. I just realized this is a long response. I hope it helps.

I'll check back later.

Ok thanks all for responses
I have a Stonehaven Briar brand new. I have so far only tried St Bruno which i dont like and Clan which i used to smoke as a teenager and still find ok'ish.
Your right Vince i do get a gurgle towards the end.
As a beginner i am trying various methods of packing i can keep the pipe lit from start to finish with the second light with no bother.

I have ordered some loose tabacco from an established firm in Otley Yorkshire England so hopefuly will enjoy some quailty Smoke.

Excellent Forum its amazing what info is out there.

Thanks again

Just my 2 cents - I was "dottle-ing" so much that I was ready to quit smoking pipes but found that a pipe screen helped immensely. I suggest using an oversized one so that you can form it into the bowl and remove it without scratching.

It helped me a lot with my dottle problem when I switched to Pipe from RYO and Cigars.
