Not sure if this is the right section for this or not. If it isn't I apologize. I just started smoking a pipe about three days ago. From what I can tell my current pipe is a nice one, a Duke I believe by Dr. Grabow. My problem is that when I smoke it and try sipping a coke my mouth burns quite badly. I can only drink water while smoking, and even up to an hour after words. I have been packing the tobacco like I read on various websites, loading loosely then packing that down, loading again and packing once more, then adding a tiny bit till it's about 1/8 of an inch or so under the rim. I'm using "Captain Black Gold" aromatic(I think) tobacco. I needed to know if this is temporary or some sort of bad reaction. Any replies are greatly appreciated. |

Steve, I’ve owned and smoked pipes throughout my life. There was a period in my young adult life when I didn’t smoke a pipe at all, just cigarettes. When I returned to the pipe I discovered that I’d become a tenderfoot. My tongue and mouth became overly sensitive to the pipe smoke, partly because my pipe smoking technique was shot to hell. Initially, my mouth was raw, but it soon adjusted. Recently in a game of skins I was totally absorbed in my golf and not my pipe. In retrospect I should keep ready a tin of Copenhagen for such moments, when I want/need/crave a jolt of nicotine. The pipe tobacco I was carrying just didn’t have the punch I needed, so I compensated by increasing my smoking cadence resulting in some tongue bite. Was a tender palate worth it? In a New York minute. If you have never smoked a pipe, I’m afraid it may take some time getting used to it. Rinsing one’s mouth, three times a day, with bonded bourbon or a similar spirit soothes oral maladies and provides great restorative benefits too. |

I had the same problem when I was new to pipe smoking and I found out that the burning sensation was almost immediately quenched if I drank cold milk while smoking. It's a strange combination, but it helps get your mouth used to it. I also drank coffee with sugar and cream, which greatly reduced the effects of the heat. Keep in mind that it's just temporary and you will get used to it. By the way, my first pipe (13 years ago) was a Dr. Grabow Golden Duke. Most of us start with Grabow's! |

Hi. For me, it is black tea with milk that works. |
