I recently won two Savinelli punto oro pipes on Ebay; a very nice Canadian, stamped Savinelli punto oro, 802, birdseye, and a more or less square billiard model with a saddle mouthpiece and a kind of finish I never have seen before, it looks like coral, which has the punto oro and 515 KS stamped in it.
I really would like to post some pictures but despite shrink pic I never get them small enough- Sorry Melvin, you did more than your best to explain it to me several times!
These pipes have no filter borings.
I checked the Savinelli site, but still did not find the answer about the quality I am looking for.
How can I compare/rate the quality of these pipes with for example Peterson, Stanwell or another popular brand?

Thank you!

Paul T.

Paul, I have two Punto Oro's, in fact I am smoking one right now, a bent Billiard black sandblast and it is excellent.
On the other hand, the other one I have (straight billiard) is....erm, no good :-(
At one point it broke and it was replaced with the same model and it smoked just as badly: gurgly, hot, nasty!

I have luck with those two pipes; both do smoke well, I opened the draft-hole to 3,5 mm before I smoked them, and with a half fill they smoked easy and bone-dry right down to the bottom.
In the past I had 3 Savinelli Silver's; one was really good, so very good I ruined it by smoking it empty till the last bit everytime until I got a burn-through at the bottom, the other 2 were not spectacular in smoking quality, despite being well made.
It was an instinctive reaction, this bidding, and until now I do not regret I did it.
Regards,
Paul T.

Hmm the punto oro part has me stumped because my first thought was that it was a meerschaum medttereanea [that's their name not my mispelling] line pipe. I have one like this and it feels like coral and has a brownish auburn coral look to it as well. This particular line is not one that I have seen to much material on. Currently it is not being produced and I do know that there were several models available once upon a time but the rest remains a mystery to me.
