Okay, for you Dunhill experts this is a goody but an oldy. I am (hopefully) doing a trade for a Dunnie with a 5 digit code and an inner tube. My question is, what does the fifth number mean in the Dunhill code, so for instance, 2103 means group 2, tapered bit, billiard. But what does 21031 (o r 2 or 3) mean? Thanks all, getting clear answers on Dunhill coding can be tricky. Tim |

It certainly can be tricky when you inquire about the fifth number and then ask about numbers 2 or 3. The fifth number in your example is the number 1. The first number, 2, means the group size; the second number, 1, refers to the kind of stem; the third and fourth numbers, 03, refer to the shape. Now we get to the fifth number, 1 in your example above. I will present you with what I have in my file: "I remember these things, but don't often remember where or how I found them out. The fifth digit indicated a variance of the bowl shape. The information I remember reading stated that there were (for example) five or six variations of the billiard bowl. Except that the info was from Dunhill, I can't tell you any more about it." Unfortunately, I do not recall how I got that information quoted above. |

What is most amusing about the numbering systems and how they appear to change over time, is that there appears to be no, or no clear, Dunhill-issued data on them. |

I don't think Alfred Dunhill ever envisioned the controversy that exists today over Dunhill nomenclature. There are errors in various areas of the nomenclature published on the Internet. I cannot state with any certainty the quote I used above is accurate information, for that information comes from someone else and not verified by me. Yes, it would be nice if Dunhill had some official explanation of the nomenclature used over the years, and maybe it does exist somewhere... |

Thanks Melvin. I was kind of thinking it would be a variant on something. I also thought you would be the guy to ask! Tim |
