Hello,

Could someone with sandblasting experience please indicate which abrasives and what grit size produce good grain revealing results? Sources?

Any thoughts on unusual techniques and/or successful methods would also be appreciated.

I don't know the level of your experience with blast - so I'll relate my experience from a newby attempt...

I tried some "home" sandblasting and, while generally pleased with the effect, I found that briar is as hard as advertised. :-) My grain was exposed - but lightly - heavy etching (like on a Cooke) was a far-off dream...

This article

http://www.amsmoke.com/Writings/PIPE_ESSAYS/Musing_folder/Sandblast.html

does a great job of detailing the needs of sandblasting. I basically used the same small setup that is mentioned (30 gal compressor & gravity feed) - and got the same weak results.

If you want to do it right, you're going to have to invest in high-end equipment - large compressor and pressurized sand as a minimum.
