I was wondering... when it says a certain pipe uses superior briar or high grade briar, will this cause it to be a better smoker, or are the differences mostly just cosmetic/grain oriented? |

Spot on! but one more thing- how much does design of the chamber come into play vs the quality of the briar (design vs materials)? |

Design of the chamber? That is another topic for discussion. I suggest you start a new thread with specific questions on that subject. The subject here is "Differences in briar quality." |

I think, there also is some difference in taste of were the briar comes from, apart prom the way it is treated after harvesting it, if the taste of a pipe is one of the briar qualities apart from absence of impurities and grain beauty. just like grapes from the same sort, grown on different soils give wine with a different taste, there is a difference in taste of the pipe wether your briar comes from Greece, Algeria or France. I for myself do like the brair Winslow does and Brigham did use, would not be surprised when their briar has the same country of origin. Some manufacturers buy brair everywhere and then you get the phenomen, you bought a pipe of that brand that tastest like heaven, and the second pipe you buy from the same brand because the first one was so good is not nearly you expected from that brand. |

Paul you are very observant. To calm my pad this time of the year I treat myself to some pipes. Some makers such as Dunhill and Brigham do go after good briar. All pipes have problems even if its you have to pay for the name. Some, the air hole isnt in the best place etc.or maybe they are out of business.Quality of briar is like buying a dog with a pedigree, you know you should get consistent qualities . But as everyone knows, sometimes a mutt is a great dog. This is why sometimes if money is a probllem we might buy 5 inexpensive pipes and get 3 good smokers. if i'm buying one pipe its usually a brand i know will give me a great smoke almost always. The point is you wouldn't take a old Dunhill on a camping trip? this is where pad saves us we have to buy pipes from all price ranges. When we know as pipe smokers what everybody else is missing. We need those pipes to rough it with us. We need the ones we hold lovingly in our favorite chair. this goes on and on,but in short we need pipes to celebrate our lives.,,and we want them all to smoke good. This is the story and im sticking to it.Good pipes like the people that smoke them come from all over. |
