Does olive wood smoke hotter than briar (and therefore not quite as good a smoke)? I was looking at paronelli pipes who supposedly have a lot of olive wood offerings but I can't differentiate between the olive wood and the briar. Thanks for all your help.

Olive comes in many varieties. My experience with the common European Olive is that it offers an exceptionally dry smoke, and makes a very good pipe. It is softer than briar, and more easily damaged both by physical abuse and by heat.

How "hot" a pipe smokes is usually more to do with how hard it is being sucked on. Olive burns at a lower temperature than briar, so you have to be a bit careful until you have a good cake. But if you see an olive pipe you like, don't hesitate - they are good smokers.
