I just picked up a pre transition Barling and smoked it for the first time this morning. For some reason i am getting a lot of saliva build up at the shank and stem joint. I don't do this any any of my other pipes. My question is when i pull the stem out of the pipe the shape at the end facing forward toward the bowl is like this >. The other pipes in my collection all have that part facing this way< in ward toward the stem and away from the bowl. Is this typical of all Barlings? This pipe is very different from any pipe i currently smoke. It might be a matter of me just figuring out how to smoke it. Any help would be appreciated. |

Is it a bent pipe or straight?
If it is bent, try pulling the stem out of the stummel about 1/8" next time you smoke, and see what happens. Some bents have an issue where the tenon occludes the airway in the stummel.
Most pipes are indeed counterbored on the surface of the tenon as a way of preventing water from hanging around at the tip and gurgling. Yours might benefit from being "reversed" but I don't know what that would do to the value or if it would for sure improve the smoke. |

Todd, My Barling is a straight pot. Its a great smoking pipe. I just have to be very delicate in the way i smoke it. Thanks for the help. |
