Hello everyone,

As a long time cigarette smoker, I'm thinking about trying the pipe out.
I have a couple of questions, as I'm seriously lacking expertise on this topic.

Can I inhale from the pipe or do I need a filter for this? If so, does every model has it's own or can I buy it at any pipe shop?
I want to buy a MacQueen Wizard pipe (classic churchwarden). Is that a good choice?

Thank you in advance.

Regards,
Viktor L.

Viktor, you CAN inhale pipe tobacco, but most don't. It's extremely strong compared to cigarette smoke.

As to filters, the most common in Europe is the 9mm type, of which many brands are available. Savinelli makes a 6mm balsa filter for its pipes, and Brigham also has their own special tube system.

If I remember correctly, the MacQueen pipes have wooden stems, which are neither as comfortable nor as durable as an ordinary vulcanite or lucite one.

As an introductory pipe, something not too expensive might be in order?

I don't think it takes a filter though.

I know that in europe, Stanwell's Hans Christian Anderson Churwardens are available with a standard 9mm filter.

Mr. Viktor Lenz,
In my openion the smoke of a pipe is to be savored in the mouth, were nicotine is absorbed by the oral tissue and tobacco flavors are enjoyed. To the best of my knowledge I am unaware of any pipe smokers who intentially inhale pipe smoke and when done accidentally IMHO it's sort of like getting kicked in the chest by a mule. The fact being if you do venture into the brotherhood of pipe smoking it will be your choice as to how you will participate and if you will inhale or not, The best of luck to you in this venture.

Viktor,
A churchwarden would not be my recommendation of a place to start, but they do look cool. Consider where and when you are going to smoke, it is awkward to carry such a long pipe out in public and not chance breaking the stem.
If you are going that route I would suggest looking for one that comes with both a long and short stem, so you can indulge yourself with the long stem in the comfort of your den, and have the short stem for other times.

Also make sure you have a supplier of the longer pipe cleaners required by the longer stem, you will be surprised how many pipe cleaners you will go through over time, and you can't run into a variety store or drugstore and get extra long pipe cleaners.
Enjoy,
Al (in Canada)

Everyone, thank you very much for your help!

I decided to go for http://www.zemanpipes.com/pipe.php?pipe_id=27 and after that a churchwarden or even a meerschaum one!
Also, thanks for the smoking info, the taste / flavor thing really sounds interesting.

Just thought I'd throw this in....
I inhale the smoke from my pipes. But, I also used to smoke 3 1/2 packs of Chesterfield kings per day. (If you don't know what Chesterfields are, ask your grandfather)

The Macqueens are very nice looking pipes, but from those who have smoked from them they have been given less than raving reviews...

The harshness of the smoke if you do inhale is greatly dependent on tobacco type and how hot the smoke is....

Don't be fooled by the folklore that churchwardens are a cooler smoking pipe. I've gotten plenty of bite off of mine...

I applaud your decision to try the pipe. My father always told me that if your going to smoke, smoke a pipe.
