Group:

Could you guys recommend a pipe maker who would be willing to make a "custom" pipe.

I'm not sure where to start or which makers are recommended. My budget would be around $200 and the pipe is a fairly straight forward concept.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Sean, unless you want a really crazy design, I'm sure I could do it for you. If I can't, I can certainly direct you to someone who CAN.

Mark Tinsky, Adam Davidson, JM Boswell, Ryan Quagliata.... there's lots of candidates.

While I have no experience with his work, Mark Tinsky's website includes a 'design your own' service. http://www.amsmoke.com/DESIGN%20PIPE/designpipe.html

There is a forum for pipemakers. You might search it out and try there. For $200 for a custom order you might be able to find a new pipemaker who would do it for the exposure and having some help promoting his work. If you look at the websites of the established pipemakers they sell pipes in the $200 range as fast as they can make them without the hassle of a custom order. Good LucK!

There is also Stefan Seles, a Canadian pipe maker who should be able to help you.
He also sells Trypis pipes.
Good Luck!

Paul T.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I'll try contacting the names listed and also posting a message on the pipe makers forum - that should be a great place to start.

From the sound of things though, I might have to consider increasing my budget!

Hi Sean:

Sorry for the delay in responding. Just got back from a lengthy holiday. I'd be pleased to work with you on your project. Click on my name and send me an email so we can discuss this further.
Best,

Dave

"From the sound of things though, I might have to consider increasing my budget!"

Sean speaking from experience you can get a heck of a wonderful smoking experience out of a Stanwell for well under $200.00. I have come across some very old Stanwells over the years on Ebay that were unsmoked specimens and have become irreplaceable in my rotation of "keepers."

Even the newer production Stanwells are sturdy smokers that are of excellent construction, and I highly recommend that in your considerations they do not go overlooked.

If you decide to go the other rout and look for more expensive pipes I can recommend looking to the Danish pipe carvers Peter Heeschen and Lasse Skovgaard. I have seen sandblasted offerings in the estate market over the years that were not much more expensive than what your budget is currently offering. In fact I bought 3 sandblasted Lasse's brand new a couple of years ago that were exactly $200 each, of which I sold one immediately because it was a bit too large for my tastes, and kept the other 2. Both will be kept because they yield a wonderful smoking experience as Virginia and Virginia perique pipes.

Good luck and remember- experimenting with different makes and manufacturers is all part of the charm and greater enjoyment of the hobby. It's a learning and a growing experience for which "experience" itself is the great reward!
