any experiences with this Turkish on-line retailer?
i've beenlooking at one of his offerings: a"genuine" BLOCK meerschaum-lined walnut clad calabash at a price which invites some investigation before commiting
thanks for any help you can provide

Yes, I bought a pipe there a couple of years ago. I was not happy with it and returned it. The return policy is expensive, international shipping and a restocking charge. The stem had an asymmetrical opening at the bit making it very thin in one area as well as visually unappealing. Also there were numerous file or sanding marks on the stem. I did receive my refund minus the stocking charge as well as a snippy email telling me I was too picky for my own good, it was not a positive experience.

I have purchased meerschaum pipes from Aznavur Pipes (www.aznavur.com) several times, and have been completely satisfied. The pipes are of excellent quality for the money, and the shipping is quick. You will get a pipe delivered to your door for less than half of what it would cost you in the states. You will be happy with them.

In response to Mr. Hornyak;
I bought a pipe from altinokpipe, a very nice Umbrella Calabash, about 3 years ago. While the prices of Mr. Altinok's pipes are not in league with your "cigar store" pipe brands, I find his pipes are much superior in quality & have no qualms with making further purchases from altinokpipe. I enjoy my calabash daily & have watched it color nicely. While this was the most expensive pipe I have purchased in my 30 years of pipe smoking, it is also by far the nicest, well-made, & best smoking pipe I have ever owned. All the testimony I have seen online from other pipe smokers who have purchased from Mr. Altinok have been completely positive until I read the above post from Mr. Gregj in response to your post.
As to Mr. Brown's post about Aznavur Pipes, I have seen many pipes similar to these at local pipe shops, & the prices are also the same. I suspect these pipes to be the aforementioned "cigar store" brands as I happen to own one of the lion head pipes exactly like the one at the bottom of their web page. It is a lesser quality meerschaum that doesn't smoke well at all, although the carving is very nice indeed. I would not suggest a purchase of one of these in favor of a truly remarkable smoking pipe from Mr. Altinok.

many thanks, john. times and money being what they are a new meerschaum is still in the cards, but not my immediate priority. let's see what santa brings. i was looking at the wood-cased calabash...i love meerschaum smoking qualities but sometimes dislike the way even the gentlest touch of the hand mars the finish ever so slightly!
