Over the past year I've heard Scuttlebutt about Stanwell from divers sources. Does anyone have definitive knowledge as to whether the Danish factory is closing or if production will be moved outside of Denmark [amounts to the same thing as far as I'm concerned, kind of like Doulton made in China]. Any info would be appreciated. |

If Stanwell's directors and chief carvers have Chinese visa stamps in their passports, that's a strong indication, given the way the wind is blowing. |

This was from a Danish newspaper back in June -- Translation from a business associate at the Danish Museum in Elkhorn, Iowa > Pibefabrik flytter udenlands Pipe factory to move abroad. > 03. jun. Soon production of pipes here in the region will end. Production of Stanwell Pipes in Borup will close at the end of this year and move abroad. Closure is the result of the fact that pipe sales in Denmark have decreased by almost 50% in the last fourteen years. Moving production abroad will mean that Stanwell will be able to produce pipes at a competitive price, but it also means an end to employment for the seventeen employees in Borup and an end of a unique era in pipe production here in Denmark. Stanwell is the last production facility in the country, leaving only small pipe makers who produce customized pipes. |

Russ, your response is quite definitive! Thanks for the translation also, even though it saddens me. Curious that Danish sales would be the cause. I would have thought worldwide sales were far greater. |

FYI, in early December, in Haikou, China, there will be the First Int'l Chinese Pipe Exhibition, and the Danish Ambassador and a slew of Danish and other makers will attend. Your question can be definitely asked at that time, in that venue. If the answers are evasive, you have your answer. |

Re your note Hawkwood: "Curious that Danish sales would be the cause." Denmark is not the country it once was. The population has changed along with many other European nations. |
