Hello all! I've been eyeballing a few Cherrywood pipes online recently but find it difficult to commit since I have no idea how the cherrywood effects the quality of the smoke, if they smoke hotter or cooler than briar, if they're more fragile than briar... the list goes on. If some experienced cherrywood smokers would kindly provide some insights, I'd be most grateful. Thanks a lot and happy puffing! |

I have a couple of Ropp Cherry pipes that smoke well-they do not last as long as briar-I also have an apple wood pipe and an olive wood pipe - as with all pipes each smokes differently but I don't find they impart any special flavor to the smoke- you definitely should try one- they are usually fairly inexpensive. |

Thanks for the info! I went looking again and discovered that "cherrywood" commonly refers to the shape as well as the wood, leaving me looking at a bunch of briar instead of actual cherry wood like I thought. I've looked around with a more discerning eye and am now having trouble finding an authentic cherrywood for sale. Any tips or recommendations? |

Hi David: The company that actively marketed cherry pipes was Ropp. They went out of business in the early 1990's. If you go to ebay and search "ropp pipes," you'll find quite a few for sale including some that are unsmoked. I've owned a couple over the years. They're great knockabout pipes and smoke pretty well. Best, Dave |

David, Try E-bay. Look for a Ropp. It is made of wild cherry. Many of the styles have the bark still on the wood.

I'm amazed that I didn't even think to check e-bay! I have since had a look and discovered several beauties for sale at very good prices (currently). I've place a bid on one and am following a few others. If I win an auction I'll post photos once I receive it/them. By the way, Jim, that's a great lookin' Ropp. Hopefully I'll wind up with one as nice as yours! Many thanks for the tips! |
