I spotted this pipe in a local smoke shop and noticed that the text on its metal plate has rubbed off. Here's the thing, there are three others identical to it in the shop and all have the text rubbed off of the metal plate. This seems odd to me. Intentional? Not likely. But why would all four have the text rubbed out. Anyway, I digress.

Stanwell ???

My main goal here is identification. It looks like a year pipe to me, but I've scoured the internet and can't find an image of a Stanwell year pipe that looks like this. Being unable to find images of several years, I cannot positively identify this as a year pipe. Could it be a specialty? A limited run? A designer pipe?

It looks to me to be a year pipe-not necessarely a Stanwell pipe of the year.
Stanwell also has made those pipes with the silver plates for tobacco shops etc, engraved to their wishes.
I am a regular visitor at Pfeifen Schneiderwind in Aachen-Germany; they bring out every year a pipe of the year, one year made by Brebbia, another year by Former or Peterson, Stanwell also made one for them.
All those pipes are engraved with "Aachen" and the date of the year.
I do have a couple of Stanwell pipes of the year, and the silver shields are engraved only shallow, so it is possible to have this engraving polished away and re-engrave with your own name or so.
When I look at the stem of this pipe, I think, it is an older model, possible from the 80-thies, because the material is ebonite, visible because there is no silver dot behind the "S".
Kind Regards,
Paul T.

I found this in a old pipes digest(#231), cant really tell if its a hexagon or not, and i know there's no band, but it sorta sounds like the pipe above

" Unfortunately for my credit card balance, they had
recently gotten in some new stock for Christmas and what to my wondering
eyes did appear, but the Stanwell '96 Pipe of the Year. This is a
sandblasted billiard with a hexagonal shank, silver band, and silver
plate that says Stanwell 1996."
